My daughter suggested a Thai food Thanksgiving and I’m so down with that. A huge cuisine that I don’t know squat about except I rarely encounter a dish that I don’t like.

Alaskan here. Nobody’s confused here, everyone knows who’s who.

Earlier this evening, my wife picked this up, looked at me and said something like, “you used to weigh this much plus two more whole bags full.” With help in large part to beans but to a whole food plant based diet in general I’ve lost a significant amount of weight over the past several months.

She’s been after me for years to eat vegetables and now it’s coming back to haunt her perhaps. My kids are less crazy about all of this but they’re in high school so they’re pretty much shrugging at anything my wife or I do anyhow. Now they’ll perhaps get a few more years of shrugging at us.

The real question my wife and I asked ourselves tonight over dinner was: could we eat in this fashion indefinitely? It’s def. more work but the payoff has been huge both in health benefits but also in taste. I feel like I am learning quite a bit in the kitchen but the results have been worth it!

I’m beyond excited. I have seen many of my elders in my family as well as some siblings and peers struggle with keeping numbers in check, and I’m well aware of some of the bad outcomes that can happen. I have certainly had the good fortune of responding really well to diet and exercise sure;

But none of this would have been possible without a very supportive, not to mention insanely patient, wife. I’ve put a lot of time in over the past several months relearning how to prepare dinner and adjusting the rhythm of the week according to food prep needs.

A few weeks ago when I visited my folks I ordered up a cholesterol panel - good to get out of the house for an hour even if it’s to get jabbed a bunch. When the results came back I was pretty floored. I knew it’d be better just due to the fact that I was paying more attention to what I was eating,

Picture from a few years back when I met my parents part way across Idaho. They in their camper, me on my bike, coming in from SeaTac en route to Missoula. My family joined up too since they were visiting family in Boise! Big rendezvous, lots of fun.

If memory serves this picture was taken on the same day after finishing the climb up Whitebird Grade. It was here that I learned the answer to the riddle of steel.

My kids won’t touch it. My wife is waiting to see if I make it. I sort of feel she’s propping me up like I’m doing some sort of Kyle McLaughlin thing from the old Dune taking the Water of Life.

Took it out of the bottom oven (set to proof) so I could start up the oven. Condensation visible, warm to the touch. Maybe I see mycelium starting to grow? I could be hallucinating.

Cooling temps have really put the spurs in me to get the stoves ready to go for fire season. Walking around the house with a heavy flannel and a wool hat for the past couple of weeks

I got back into a tempeh consumption mood after eating some homemade stuff a couple times in Pahoa while visiting the big island. Super good! Have never made it before but I do love to make fermented stuff from time to time.

4 months after implementing doctor recommended changes (the ol' "diet and lifestyle modifications") all my "bad" numbers are back down off the cliff and I feel great. Go team!

My favorite car’s HVAC controls had just mechanical levers. Didn’t have to take my eyes off the road to turn on the defrost, adjust temperature, etc. Glass cockpits are so obnoxious in this regard, no tactile feedback.
