And this is why I've just switched from Halifax/Lloyds to @triodosuk.bsky.social and @cuebcustomerunion.bsky.social (Co-op) - it's nice to know my money won't help fund the weapons industry, global warming and genocide.
It's not a "rival" "takeover", it's a historic remutualisation! Don't believe everything that you read.

Great to see! Cambridge Uni is shifting some 💸 away from HSBC and Barclays and towards "preferred banks including Handelsbanken, the Co-operative Bank and Coventry Building Society."
Huge UK banks are losing money from Cambridge University "as it starts pulling hundreds of millions of pounds away from institutions that finance fossil fuels." 🥳
Huge congratulations to the students campaigning on this! Climate destruction has consequences 👊

We were pleased to see Coventry keep reporting on the Co-op Bank’s Ethical Policy to the same level of detail.
But we're worried that the number of businesses turned away for ethical policy reasons is at its lowest in a decade.

The Co-op Bank needs to:
📱 improve digital platforms
📣 communicate its ethics boldly again
✊ take a position, on issues from Palestine to AI ethics and the rise of the far right.
This can't wait until 2027 or 2028 whe the merger with Coventry Building Society has been completed.
Now the Co-op is back in mutual ownership, we need that level of boldness back, and we need a clear, timed commitment to extend the Ethical Policy across the whole merged organisation.

🤝We met with the bank to represent our members and ask their questions.

Issues we raised:
👉 Why can't we use a land line for two-factor authentication?
👉 What accounts packages work with the bank's Open Banking interface?
👉 When can we expect a clear announcement about extending the bank’s ethical policy to Coventry Building Society?

The Co-op Bank has sold on its Mas5 subsidiary, which contains "mortgage prisoners". Why did the bank (& its new owner, Coventry Building Society) not help them by taking them on as normal customers? The bank has declined to comment.

Coventry Building Society is no stranger to ethical business, but tends to be less vocal about it. Now that it owns the Co-op Bank, will it follow the bank in being a noisy advocate on climate change and human rights? We hope so!

It was nice of Co-op bank to email me about account security, to tell me they will never (sorry, 'NEVER') send me an email with a link, and to include a link for me to follow up for more details…

In practice of course, ethical arms companies don’t exist. But worth remembering that the Co-op Bank’s Ethical Policy on the arms trade has always focused on human rights, & never excluded defence companies supplying conventional arms to open, democratic governments.

Some of the credit for saving The #Co-operative Bank must also go to the Customer Union for Ethical Banking @cuebcustomerunion.bsky.social (originally Save Our Bank and now a co-op society), which is I think the first ever Customer #Union to achieve a recognition agreement
Coventry Building Society has taken over the Co-op Bank (United Kingdom), restoring it to mutual ownership after its near-collapse in 2013 when it was sold to private investors. The merger promises enhanced benefits from increased customer numbers and expanded mortgage and savings balances. 🏦👷♀️
