Quite a few stations reporting at or above 90° in northwestern Wisconsin.

Wisconet@wisconet.bsky.social

The normal October 10 temperatures at our Bayfield station are a low of 37 and a high of 55. With a low of 55.9 and a high of 88.5 so far…fair to say that today is above average.

Photo from around 6:20 PM last evening (Sun, Sep 20) as a stunning high based supercell spun over the harvest landscape near Newton, Illinois. This supercell was a downburst machine, producing corridors of 60-65 mph winds flattening some ready-to-harvest corn. #ilwx

Radar reconstruction of today's (8/22) plume development from the #HawkFire in Reno, NV. Notable transition to a hydraulic like flow late in the day (~00 UTC) linked to dangerous run into town. We were conducting onsite lidar scans during the transition.

Weather station data and sssssssnakes? We're looking at our soil temperature data and other information to see if our network can be used to notify land managers when endangered Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnakes are likely to have emerged in the spring.

Great to be back on WTTW taking science!

After a summer of extreme weather, an upcoming El Niño could bring changes this winter. In Chicago, “the dice will be loaded for a warmer and drier winter than normal,” said Scott Collis, an atmospheric scientist at Argonne National Laboratory. https://to.wttw.com/4zbZKTg

Huge news for Illinois! Folks are seeing the innovation happening in our state with results like the National Science Foundation’s $40M investment in DREAM and PoLARIS to continue the expansion of our burgeoning life sciences and advanced manufacturing industries.

These long flight time balloons are fascinating and open up some real cool autonomous laboratory possibilities where the positioning of these systems could be driven by models and AI based uncertainty quantification.

Been tons of negative stories recently about weather balloons, but let's tell a positive tale today: WindBorne Systems completed an extremely cool mission to fly a balloon into typhoon Dolphin, and NOAA is working with the private sector to get this kind of data into its models. tinyurl.com/yc673875

Most importantly, not only was this the 7th wettest july on record, we got the overwhelming majority of our rain in THREE events. I will be on @wbez.org tomorrow to chat with (the yet to be on @bsky.app ) Sasha-Ann Simons (produced by @mehaahmad.bsky.social ). 9:05am. Tune in. Geek out.

A pair of storms on the front and back ends of July made for a wetter month than normal, according to a National Weather Service summary. https://to.wttw.com/4g8zK3E

🔴 Flo Balogun has been SENT OFF. USMNT will play the rest of the second half with 10 men. If the USMNT advances, Balogun suspended next round. GIGANTIC decision.

Wow.. made a quip about needing to be on drugs to understand book three of Dune (God Emperor of Dune, its pretty trippy and dense)... All of a sudden Meta clamps down my account... Yeah, the same place which is full of misogyny et al.. All AI automated of course.. sheesh!

These are the kind of events that really interest me as they expose the weaknesses in our urban hydrological systems which can start to redistribute runoff instead of removing it.

A persistent training thunderstorm has been pounding communities south of Montreal for hours this afternoon. Radar estimates show 4-5+ inches (100-125+ mm) of rain across the region over the past six hours.

Here are some probability outlook maps for variables like wind, hail, and tornados. FYI I'm just an amateur weather nerd, and know where to find this data so I can share it. As always, check in with real meteorologists you trust for up to date info through the day.

RCP and SSP scenarios are not emission scenarios. I repeat: they are not emission scenarios. They are radiative forcing scenarios. Forcing = human emissions + the response of the climate system to those emissions You can only back out emissions by making assumptions about climate sensitivity.

ERA5 temperature and precipitation data are now out. For the Lower 48, the Nov-Apr period was not only the warmest Nov-Apr period of record (since 1940-41), but it was also the second driest. A tough combination for sure. 🥵🌵

I always love it how clearly the leading edge of the QLCS shows up on spectrum width. All the turbulence! Followed by somewhat laminar flow right behind the leading convection.
