“Oops! All Frankensteins” #moviegeddon entry 7! Bride of Frankenstein (1935)! This ones great. Injecting levity ensures it’ll always have a leg up on its predecessor in my eyes. Biggest disappointment is the Bride not arriving until the final five minutes & the movie not being about her 8/10 Bolts

Moviegeddon: “Oops All Franksteins” entry 6! Frankenstein (1931) I suppose this should have been early in the list but oh well. I genuinely love watching this movie. Karloff crushes of course & Pierce’s makeup still looks incredible. Bonus stunt points for lobbing that girl into a lake. 8/10 Bolts

Movie 5! The Brain That Wouldn’t Die (1962) Somehow I’d never seen this one! Pretty great entry to the genre. Lots of fun & obvious cheats. Monsters are easier to do with proper casting (7’6”!) But Virginia Leith steals it in spite of just being a severed head for most of the movie. 8/10 Bolts

Entry number 4 is this year’s #moviegeddon “Oops! All Frankensteins” is Frankenstein Island. A movie I have SO MANY thoughts about. It’s a wild ride even you hate it but I do recommend watching. I don’t want to do a massive restive post so here’s my Letterboxd instead 4/10 Bolts

Movie number 3! Van Helsing! Truly one of the better outcomes for the Monster. Bops around with Wolverine for a bit and then sails off on the Black Sea. This packs 400lbs of nonsense into a pillowcase & it somehow ends up being immensely fun & campy. Solid addition to the #moviegeddon 7/10 Bolts

Movie 2! Re-Animator! Easy to see how this movie helped lead people (me included) to a spfx/makeup effects hobby or career. Camera tricks, flying limbs, buckets of blood, with a wide range of believability. BUT!! Does not age well in the same way Revenge of the Nerds doesn’t age well. 5/10 Bolts

It’s October!! This year’s Horror #Moviegeddon theme is “Oops! All Frankensteins” so of course we begin here. We’ve hopefully all seen Rocky Horror, but if you haven’t, Tim Curry is there, ready to wreck you. Please go into it expecting a faithful retelling of literary source material. 9/10 Bolts

It’s October 1st! Horror Moviegeddon begins! This year’s theme is “Oops! All Frankensteins” so among whatever horror movies I throw in I’ll be watching at least 31 that feature Frankenstein or Frankenstein adjacent themes.

I’m not repeating any movies this year so I’ve been sitting on a heap of horror flicks that I’m really excited to watch. Shout out to my Partner for being steeped in patience as I take over the television for Frankmageddon!

Partner is out of town & I’ve got a sick cat to take care of which means it’s time for another moviegeddon. I was struggling for a theme in addition to my standard “movies I haven’t seen” but a near miss of a bear with our car means it’s Oops All Animals! Let’s see how many I can get through!

Movie 16! The Boy & The Heron! This wasn’t bad but I excepted to like it much more. It’s gorgeous. It’s well acted (tho Bautista literally always sounds like Bautista, which pulled me out). But overall it felt like a collection of beautiful art that tried adding a story afterwards. 7/10 herons

That’s wraps up the “Oops All Animals” edition of Moviegeddon! Sixteen movies, well shy of my record, but only one real stinker in the mix. Not too bad. Definitely go watch my favorites- Horse Girl and Concrete Cowboys (both on Netflix), they stood hands above the rest. Horse joke!

Movie 14! Thrash! This movie looks very expensive. It is also quite stupid. But the cast & writers all seem to be in on the joke. Does that make it better? Probably not. This movie has LOTS of water & LOTS of hammy lines Bonus points for having both the human & shark leads be pregnant. 4/10 sharks

Movie 15! The Voices! A pre-Deadpool does a lot of murdering! This one struggled with tone. Not sure it was trying to be a comedy? Maybe horror? It was bloody, to be sure. Beyond that I couldn’t put a finger on the intended genre. Ultimately felt sorry for all involved 5/10 cat & dog bonded pairs

Movie 12 is Good Boy! A 2020 flick where Judy Greer adopts a smol emotional support dog who promptly begins destroying anyone in her life that gives her anxiety. This was fun and popcorny and I was delightful to find two movies with the same name! 6/10 dogs

Movie 13 is Good Boy! A 2022 flick from Norway where a woman goes home with her tinder date only to discover he lives with his dog Frank. Oh and also Frank is a human man in a dog costume. Horror ensues! Imagine my *extreme* joy at finding three of these titles to triple feature!!! 7/10 dogs

The undercurrent of self recognition - a life given to the entertainment industry, with clearly no intent by the industry to safeguard that life. The scene was Jackie Chan reflecting back with an uncertain future. I cried so much! I hope my next few watches will be easier on my heart 7/10 horses

Movie 11 is Good Boy! A 2025 flick from the POV of a dog trying to defend its person from ghosts. This was fine! Clearly low budget, but quite clever is its assembly. Human heads & bodies are framed out much of the time letting the dog take center focus. Overall not bad! 5/10 dogs

Movie 10 is Ride On with Jackie Chan. He plays an aging stuntman w/ a stunt horse. Ok listen. Being honest I didn’t care for the first half of the movie. I thought it was too silly & meandering without having a focused plot. There wasn’t much kung fu either which was really what I was hoping for.

But then the tone SHIFTED & it became a story about aging out of the film industry & the abuses that film crew (especially stunt performers) go through. There is a scene where Chan’s character & his daughter watch rl stunt reels from Chan’s life - & just sob. It was suddenly such a human movie.

Movie 9! The Lighthouse! Once again I have slept on a movie that I could have added to my regular viewing rotation. What a ride. I am infinitely glad Robert Pattinson shook the Twilight coil - he is *such* a talent in this. I don’t think anyone else could have stood opposite Defoe. 9/10 gulls

Movie 7! Concrete Cowboys. God damn what a fine movie. Based in truth - I wish this had been like five seasons of a show. I want so much more of these stories & people. Incredibly compelling. Just the *slightest* glimpse at a deep, rich, history that I hope to learn more about. 9/10 horses

Day two wraps up with movie number 8! Mascots. This is the worst Christopher Guest movie I’ve seen. I should not have stayed up for this. 2/10 cyborg armadillos (that’s right. Not even Parker Posey as a cyborg armadillo could redeem this movie)

Life of Pi is movie 5! (shoulda planned better) I read this book when it came out. I remember the story being much more elegant in print than on screen. CGI has help up remarkably well but also feels like a distraction from the source material. Heaps of animals tho! The most so far! 5/10 tigers

Movie 6! Remarkably Bright Creatures is wholesome & straightforward. It’s well acted & emotional, but that should be no surprise with Sally Field. Bonus points for the bold choice of casting Alfred Molina as yet another octopus. Weird typecast but eight arms means faster check cashing. 6/10 Molinas

Movie 3! We close out Day 1 with The Lobster - a movie so bizarrely (complimentary) crafted I was blown away by every plot development. At no point did I have solid ground beneath me (still complimentary) and I do not think I could describe it to another person (also complimentary) 9/10 lobsters

Day 2! Movie 4! A Quiet Place: Day One! Solid horror flick all around. Well executed moments of suspense & emotions. Also just about everyone makes it out alive which is a rarity for the genre. Lupita Nyong’o & her cat being named Sam & Frodo is rad, subtle, worldbuilding (also a rarity) 7/10 cats

Movie 1 is Horse Girl! What weird & heavy flick! It’s hard to predict how an unknown movie will shake out based on a blurb but Alison Brie/Duplass Bros. combo should never be slept on. Truly heart wrenching performance following a quirky opening that lulls you into a non-reliable trap. 8/10 horses

Movie 2! Cocaine Bear! Yeah sure why not? This delivers exactly what the titles promises, subverting exactly zero expectations, and should have exactly 12,000 sequels with any animal/drug combo Elizabeth Banks can think of. This was so much fun! Just let her cook. 7/10 bears

Moviegeddon Day 1! There’s a lot on my plate right now so this will be a gentle mageddoning I predict. Turns out Oops All Animals is a solid theme, though, & I’m checking off a some movies I should have seen ages ago. Which is the point, I suppose.
