Next Pan Prostate Cancer Group (panprostate.org) paper out! This one looking at bacteria in prostate cancer . Please read the post below by lead author Abraham Gihawi @abrahamgihawi.bsky.social and check it out. doi.org/10.1038/s415...

By digging into existing whole-genome sequencing data, we recovered 249 highly complete bacterial genomes from saliva, blood and tumour samples from men with prostate cancer rdcu.be/w1fzo5yefuja Here’s what we found 🧵👇

I’ve walked past this wall hundreds of times. I guess an advertising hoarding has just been removed? It’s preserved very well, the missing chunks don’t lose much

Had a UKRI funded grant proposal rejected at the "AI triage stage". "This AI-based triage was used only to identify approximately 50% of the strongest proposals to take forward to full human review." 🧪 #academicsky

Congratulations to Ricardo Ackbersingh for getting a best oral presention and best student abstract prize at Australasian Genomic Technologies Association conference 2026 in Sydney. Amazing stuff.

£6.3bn really is a huge gap for unis to fill on research each year It's sometimes said that's what QR is for, but QR is part of the calculation: without it the gap would be close to £9bn The biggest way that gap is filled is international student fees (yellow bar), but we all know how that's going

Annual research shortfall remains above £6bn at UK universities Institutions recovered 67 per cent of research costs in 2024-25, as concerns over sustainability grow www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-u...

Congratulations to Dr Anna Russell who successfully got through her viva today with a thesis titled "Investigating the molecular mechanisms of action of anaerobic bacteria on prostate cancer development and progression". Super quick time. Thanks to examiners Gwyn Williams and Ben Evans.

Next we have Jade Manning, who won the runners-up prize for best talk at the Microbial Genomics ECR Symposium @Norwich. The talk was titled "Investigating the Mechanism of Action of Anaerobic Bacteria in the Pathogenesis of Aggressive Prostate Cancer". Congratulations.

At work, I purchased a 2TB Kingston SSD drive for £95.99. It's stopped working, and so I wanted to get a replacement under the 5-year warranty. Instead, the company wrote it off and will refund the full amount. No problem, I'll buy a new one. The cost for exactly the same model is £222.99!!

woof ≈80% of assignments this summer term have essentially been just raw chatgpt/claude output, including assignments that required designing stuff in illustrator/affinity/canva. The battle is lost for asynchronous online courses.
