Dazzle-ships in Drydock at Liverpool, by Edward Wadsworth, 1919. Itโ€™s a topic that appears to have fascinated Wadsworth. I love every single one of his takes on the subject.

Things my husband has said to me with a completely straight face and zero irony: "It wasn't orange; it was more of a browny-red color."

Oooh, Copper has released the 2.0 version of Charlie, its electric induction range. It now can plug into a normal 120V outlet! Bigger battery, more power. NYC is gonna buy a bunch of these for public housing, help bring the cost down.

news consolidation is bad, of course, but the consolidation of arts and entertainment where everything is driven by the bottomline and controlled by tasteless ghouls is also bad!

Welp. According to Semafor, David Ellison has discussed bringing Elon Musk on as an investor in Paramount's merger with Warner Bros., which could mean Musk could have a stake in CBS News and CNN. www.semafor.com/article/09/2...

My 9 games. May seem redundant to list Myst & Riven, but those were so formative. I wanted to play Myst sooo bad but had to wait until we got a computer with a CD-ROM drive. And I spent so much time in Riven. Kind of cheating with the Jak collection, but those three are too hard to separate.

Itโ€™s very simple and itโ€™s been said over and over but I guess it needs saying continuously: if you deem one group too small to have equal rights you are enabling fascism, not fighting it. The people saying Dems are GREAT on trans rights are not paying attention and/or saying stuff like this.

Growing up in rural PA, we had our power taken out twice by raccoons who climbed the pole and tripped the breaker on the small transformer mounted there. One was while a friend was over and we were watching Young Frankenstein. Thunder crashed in the movie, and all the lights in the house went out.

Squirrels have fired the first shots in their long-planned assault on humanity, with daring assaults that took out power in Castle Rock, CO two days in a row.

Up to the point where you're talking about your first foray into YouTube. Those early videos are where we both encountered you. Shaun through Joe Jervis's blog, and me through Jeremy Hooper's. Also noticed the Box Turtle Bulletin citation earlier on. Read Jim's work a ton, too.

Something that is incredibly missing in a lot of local reporting is someone on the local government beat. I grew up in a rinky dink 3500 person town in the middle of the woods. Our daily newspaper managed to get to every school board, borough council, and township council meeting.

Same was true in the city of 12,000 I had been living in after that, about 40 minutes away from my hometown. Now I'm in a city of 100,000, and our local conglomerate-owned paper can't manage this. It's really frustrating!!

The stochastic parrot does not know where the baking soda comes out of the box. (Of course, the stochastic parrot doesn't *know* anything. But it especially doesn't know this.)

I'm no AI-booster. Quite the opposite. But l really think that question deserved an accurate answer, in part because it gives people a specific ask they can make to administrators. These are pretty simple setting changes. (Though it would need to be approved and tested before applying it.)

I also double checked this with a friend of mine who is still working in K-12 IT admin and has access to the Google Workspace admin console to check.

Some notable omissions that I hope to fix in the upcoming years. I was lucky to have two teachers for parents, which allowed us time to travel via RV in the summers. And my husband and I are working on seeing more places together, now that we're in a good financial situation.

The Producers (2005) I don't know that everyone else hated it, but it didn't do great at the box office. Lots of complaints about Brooks/Stroman failing in the stage to screen adaptation process, but as someone who never got to see Lane/Broderick on stage, I kind of appreciated how similar it was.

"i hate a popular thing" is mostly boring sooooo instead tell me the piece of media you love despite everyone else hating it me? i have many, but the two that spring to mind are Milla Jovovich film Ultraviolet which i own twice accidentally, PS3 game NeverDead, and Super Mario Bros. (film, 1993)

I actually kind of liked the "Golden Age of Hollywood Movie Musicals" throwback-y feel of some of the sets being obvious sets, too. Some of my affection might just be this being my first musical I really got into and the film being the first time I could see it in full, as a rural kid.

Even just to see the movie, I had to drive like 90 minutes to Erie! (A 3 hour round trip!) That was the closest I could find it playing to my hometown! The nearest theater where a touring production might have stopped was 2.5h away in Buffalo.

#1, hands down. Bert was my guy growing up. Nervous, fastidious, fussy, and with weird hobbies and obsessions. Not hard to understand why in retrospect. Bert stuffy went everywhere with me when I was small. I had the Bert and Ernie Side By Side album on tape. How could I pass up that opportunity?

This promotes the myth that home L2 charging is necessary. It is not. My husband and I have owned an EV for over 4 years now. We have not yet bothered to install a L2 charger at home, & it is not a priority. Still just charging off the standard wall outlet. 1/ www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

That "36 hour" scare figure is just that: a scare figure. We've never actually seen one of those charges at home. We get home, and we plug it in, unless it's over 70%. And even if you draw it down one day, in just a 10 hour overnight charge, our vehicle gains 50 miles of range! 4/

In all that time, outside of road trips, we have needed to charge on public chargers just 9 times. Twice when we were moving and ferrying things back and forth across town all day. And the others when we have had people visiting and we're driving up into the mountains multiple days in a row. 2/

And when I say up into the mountains, I mean we're gaining at least a mile of *elevation*, with a 100+ mile round trip, multiple days in a row. Regular trip up into the mountains for a hike, we're fine just trickle charging back up at home. 3/

This was a couple weeks ago, but when we took a drive up into #RMNP on my birthday we saw this young bull moose near the cabin on Old Fall River Road. This is at about 10,800". Very neat to see him! (Shot with a 5x telephoto lens, of course. I'm not approaching a fucking moose!)
