Someone has been doing great work clearing vegetation from the prehistoric entrance graves on Kittern Hill (Gugh, Scilly). One of life's greatest pleasures is crawling into an ancient tomb, don't you agree? #TombTuesday

#TombTuesday Small but perfectly formed 🥰 The diminutive Poulnabrone dolmen in the Burren of western Ireland, seen in summer 2023 with an Alpine carpet of wildflowers at its base💐 Did the original Neolithic builders ever think their family tomb would become world famous? 📷 My own

In 1881, when Sir Edmund Antrobus (3rd Baronet) asked his architect JJ Cole to survey the condition of Stonehenge for him, Cole erected some scaffolding against stones of the outer circle so he could climb up and take photos.

Romano-Celtic stone head found at West Denton close to Hadrian’s Wall in 1969. Now in the Great North Museum, Newcastle. This one is clearly trouble at night, hence the restraining bars. #StoneHeadSunday

My last oven but one had a missing button that made it literally impossible. The oven after that had settings menus and hid the option deep within configuration. This oven has a button you press to set/advance, then plus and minus buttons to change the hour, then the minutes. #ovenClockBulletin

Happy #StandingStoneSunday 🥳 The - ahem 🧐 - decorated stone pillar from Rhosmeirch, Ynys Mon/Anglesey, in private ownership but on display in Oriel Môn Thought to be Iron Age it is unusual for Wales. The central band has parallels with belts on European Iron Age statues 🤔 📷 My own

That’s the common theme in what I’m writing I think. White mid-upper class academic men are allowed to have flaws, allowed to do (actually terrible) things, and have them forgiven/forgotten. But for w-class men (Bill Varley), women (Maud Cunnington), MOC (Arday) one mistake or flaw is unforgivable.

I see your Norfolk horse and I raise you a disarticulated Oxfordshire horse (albeit without plastic heads on wooden poles)

Hmm, but did Rockbourne have (checks notes), plastic severed heads impaled on the gates, and a SNAKE PIT for unfortunate prisoners?

Ok. Slight changes to blocking rules. Anyone posting about stones being moved, or referring to Stonehenge whilst posting pictures of Avebury, or calling it Stone Henge will get a dad joke a day for the next 6 months

ROCKS GO BACK TONIGHT! As is traditional, we are again paying homage to all those hard working custodians of stone time keeping and rock clockery (©️ @drnickarchaeo.bsky.social) who will be working their weekend to make sure annual moving of the rocks goes to plan tonight. #Archaeology 🏺 1/4
