Walking around the famous Neolithic portal dolmen at Pentre Ifan, Nevern, Pembrokeshire 🤩 for #TombTuesday This extraordinary structure looks so different from every angle 🎥 My own, 2023; no sound

Keep an eye on the moon tonight, it’s the full Hunter’s moon and reached its peak in the early hours of this morning. 🌕 The name traditionally reflects the time of year when people prepared for winter by hunting and preserving food. Look towards the autumn sky to catch the moon glowing. ✨

#TombTuesday Small but perfectly formed 🥰 The diminutive Poulnabrone dolmen in the Burren of western Ireland, seen in summer 2023 with an Alpine carpet of wildflowers at its base💐 Did the original Neolithic builders ever think their family tomb would become world famous? 📷 My own

I have worked in Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales for over six years, yet I learn something new about our collections every day 🤩 Today I got to hold a replica Iron Age - Early Roman (c. 1st century AD) shield! It’s heavy! It’s SO heavy!

How lucky are we? It's #StuffedSoldierSaturday! Mannequins used to be a museum favourite but, sadly, are falling from favour. Here's one of the best (sadly, now gone): the pre-Flavian #RomanCavalry eques at Corinium Museum in Cirencester (GBR). Disturbingly real if you saw it in the (horse) flesh.

Ok. Slight changes to blocking rules. Anyone posting about stones being moved, or referring to Stonehenge whilst posting pictures of Avebury, or calling it Stone Henge will get a dad joke a day for the next 6 months

Happy #StandingStoneSunday 🥳 The - ahem 🧐 - decorated stone pillar from Rhosmeirch, Ynys Mon/Anglesey, in private ownership but on display in Oriel Môn Thought to be Iron Age it is unusual for Wales. The central band has parallels with belts on European Iron Age statues 🤔 📷 My own

When it comes to archaeological landscapes, there are few places in Ireland that can compare to Rathcroghan, County Roscommon, the ancient royal capital of Connacht. At the centre of this image you can see the enormous earthwork enclosure known as Relignaree (Reilig na Rí – the graveyard of Kings).

Today I think of my terrified grandmother who lived in Treharris. A year earlier, at age 14, she lost her mother to cancer and left school to take care of her siblings. Her father and brother walked to Aberfan to dig the children out. She was terrified that her father was going to die.

Sometimes I resent having to write women back into our disciplinary history (wondering what I might have achieved for prehistory itself in the time spent). But this work is important too. It’s important to know the mechanisms used to exclude women from society. And how they gained access anyway.
