I knew this guy was not well, and then saw him share nonsense by Bryan Johnson. I exhaled an involuntary "oh" when it all made sense. Imagine trying to pretend you're enlightened and on of your gurus tracks his nighttime erections? LOL.

Low profit margins are no consolation when a grocery store selects only the most expensive options for items. The Orville Redenbacher popcorn is 6X more expensive than the generic brand. Bougie stores often only have the expensive options. Margins are low, but consumers get a bad deal.

Sounds like that neo-Nazi Richard Spencer. A cast of fucking deplorable assholes is in power, and there doesn't seem to be quite the push back they deserve.

Yet another attempt at AI alignment with lofty ambition. If a software program can predict the future, it can choose those pathways that lead to low entropy and high Kolmogorov complexity. Who knew techies would so elegantly solve all of ethics? /s

"Data from three Ontario wineries found that switching even 10 per cent of the 60 million or so 750-millilitre wine bottles sold by Ontario wineries every year to refillable bottles would reduce greenhouse gas emissions from wineries by 69 per cent." o_O Umm, @thestar.com how does that math?

I just can' t with most discourse anymore. If the left/progressive folk accept the framing of intelligence and thinking scammers want to foist upon us... or accept that AI is anything but a marketing slogan... they've already lost.

Democracy Now!@democracynow.org

Writer @naomiaklein.bsky.social says the rapid rise of artificial intelligence is part of a much longer project of privatization. "After 50 years of outsourcing and hollowing out of public functions of the state, the very last stage is the outsourcing of thinking, of intelligence itself."

Last week I spoke with a lab director, spinning off medical startups. He calls it AI because that's what VCs want to hear, despite not using LLMs or any of the stuff that is popularly called AI. It's also not thinking or intelligence, nor is a diagnostic tool a dimension of privatization.

Did I become some cranky old linguistic conservative at 50? Words have meanings, damn it! And on words: some of the worst AI scammers are avowed fascists. We don't need to recycle Klein's ideological agenda to assume fascists are bad and must be fought.

Alto is now targeted by people in Toronto + English Canada, who see it as too Québécois (HQ in #Montréal , francophone executives), and the Parti Québécois, who see it as a non-Québécois conspiracy imposed by Ottawa and English Canada. It’s neither. It’s just a smart idea, one whose time has come.

Taras Grescoe 🚇@taras-grescoe.com

#Quebec’s incoming Parti Québécois government says it will fight Alto, North America’s first true high-speed rail line. Yes, the province with the most to gain from the all-electric train wants to stop this project dead in its tracks. What's behind their stance? 🧵

I have a passport, but can't prove I'm a citizen. I can't ask for a doctor, because I have a doctor, but I can't see said doctor because he's on sick leave. I can ask for an appointment at the no-appointment clinic. I fucking hate this place today.

I don't qualify for the free flu vaccine or the Covid vaccine. My local pharmacy can't get flu vaccine doses outside the free quota. The next Covid vaccine appointment is in 3 weeks, and costs $150. I also don't qualify for shingles vaccines.

BIG jump in China's exports of solar in September, far above any earlier month, except the export-tax-driven wave in March. Solar kit with annual power output equal to 10 large nuclear reactors exported in just one month. Media reporting wildly off as they used wrong metrics!

Just told a family friend I didn't want his ethically and intellectually rancid takes quoting Gad Saad on my FB wall. No, student protesters carrying Palestinian flags are not evidence of an Islamist conspiracy, and no, there's no alliance between the Western "left" and the Islamists. ffs.

I’ve been released from IDF custody with a “warning,” apparently because of my public profile (I told them I wasn’t even a congressmember yet, just a nominee). But several dozen rabbis & participants harvesting olives with me are still in detention.

Developers that claim they're 10x more productive with genAI... Writing software usually isn't more than half of the overall time spent on a project - overheads include meetings and code review. So even if code work went down to 0, isn't the ceiling 2x productivity?

As an industry, software has never figured out how to cleanly quantify productivity. It's especially hilarious to see people use lines of code as a metric, despite being abandoned decades ago. A lot of developers deleted more code than they wrote, and that is a good thing: code is a liability.

The police officer's partner stayed quiet. Politicians may be staying quiet out of fear. There are now more police officers. Insulting them is now punishable, and they have access to Flock and other surveillance cameras. The oversight is done by cops. Few ever get punished.

I don't know how we fix all these problems. The one thing I am certain about though: if more of us loudly state this isn't an isolated incident, it may be less risky for others to also debate without self-censorship. ACAB until they prove otherwise.

The SPVM has a history of corruption and illegal behaviour - from links to gangs to wiretapping journalists. At the very least, a politician that tries to argue against them is going to suffer in the media. You can also be charged for insulting cops, because what's a constitution and free speech?

cbc.caMontreal city council adopts bylaw banning insults against police, municipal employees | CBC NewsMontreal city council has adopted a bylaw to ban people from insulting police officers and other municipal employees.

Back to Ruba Ghazal. She might actually believe the SPVM only has a few bad apples. She could also be assuming that appearing naive to a few leftists is not as bad as becoming a target of the fraternité, or that surprise meets moderates where they are.

When Valerie Plante mentioned racial profiling in the SPVM, the police fraternité (yet another ra*ist frat that should be abolished) was very clear that this was war. There's evidence the threats worked. Budgets were increased, and no action was taken on the "thin blue line" badges some cops wear.

In some cities, cops have slowed response times in districts where councillors did not vote for a bigger budget. We have to assume that cop unions are comparing notes to see what works, and that the police union having obtained the highest budget increases could be playing dirty.

Writing a really dense and long text, I suddenly became aware that most readers it's destined to currently do not have the cognitive bandwidth to understand more than 20% of its message. Strange times.
