I am still overwhelmed and processing being awarded this grant. It funds a 5-year project from Jan 2027 on how trust can bolster support for major policy action on climate, redistribution, and crime prevention. You can read more here: danjdevine.github.io/contrust/ bsky.app/profile/erc....

I have come across my first probably totally AI review (as editor). The reviewer is qualified to review the paper properly. What's the point? Why would someone accept a review, only to just run it through their model of choice? They were senior, too. I don't understand the incentive.

Interesting looking paper on what you can and can't identify from staggered adoption panel data. Also, I move that all important equations get subtitles:

Lecturing tomorrow on identity and polarisation, and any excuse to get this one in (a pointlessly vicious derby between two basically identical cities). And if anyone has any recommendations they really like on the topic of identity/polarisation then send my way!

Beer. Sure, we had real ale, but the availability of actual nice beer in pubs is lightyears ahead of pre-2015's offering of Carling, Stella, Coors, etc.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But whatโ€™s something that youโ€™ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

One thing this makes us confront is that science and review is social: we care what *these people* and *the community* think, not just whether it's right.

By every measure, Opus 4.8 beats human experts as peer reviewers in a study of 124 Harvard social science papers covering a range from statistical analyses to formal models to qualitative work. As academics, we need to figure out how to adapt the practice of science to AI, and we need to do it fast

Evaluating postdoc applications since the rise of LLMs has now become a process of detective work. I now get so many applications with passable answers to the selection questions that are not backed up by any evidence in the CV. Such a waste of my time.

Whilst the paper is empirical, it has theoretical consequences. We find very little evidence for the usual theory linking trust and policy preferences, in line with other recent work. There's little relationship between trust and risk, cost exposure, or ideology.

We propose, but can't fully test, an alternative: in this case, fairness considerations override trust. If people have a base moral objection, trust is irrelevant. It is only when the 'fairness heuristic' is fulfilled that the 'trust heuristic' becomes relevant.

Inheritance tax is a good case to study the link between trust and policy preferences: it comes with costs and uncertainties, but ones that are very unevenly distributed. We use a panel, an embedded survey experiment, the British Election Study, and voting behaviour in a Swiss referendum.

Across four designs and different outcomes - general support for the tax, a specific tax rate, or abolition of an existing tax - we find trust is consistently, strongly positively related. Higher trust, higher support for inheritance tax. This is true in almost every country in the data.
