These central metabolic kinases antagonistically phosphorylate the key immune regulator NPR1, thereby coupling cellular metabolic state to systemic acquired resistance.

Further analyses showed that P-deficient plants secrete malate to attract Acinetobacter species to the rhizoplane, where the bacteria utilize plant-secreted nitrogen and carbon sources to fuel P mobilization that benefits both parties.
