this site loves to talk about the professional-managerial class and thats true as the organizing force but the real *mass* of any modern left wing movement is going to be healthcare workers, teachers, sanitation workers, arborists, and secretaries, who are *not* PMC (except some healthcare workers).

why is it that the "working class" must be involved in physical blue collar labor and be vaguely chuddy? why is it that the trans woman working as a respiratory therapist isnt working class? i am so fucking tired

There *is* a possible future

Jan Rosenow@janrosenow.bsky.social

Solar has overtaken nuclear. A decade ago it supplied 1% of the world's power. In 2025 it met three quarters of global demand growth. Almost nobody saw it coming. I spoke to Jocelyn Timperley at BBC Future about why. www.bbc.co.uk/future/artic...

This article does not discuss one major reason why chocolate in the West got worse - Ghana and Ivory Coast, the two African countries that are the biggest suppliers of cacao globally, got organised and started demanding fair prices for it. www.reuters.com/world/africa...

I will never forget the shock I got when I was promoting Syria solidarity a decade ago and other COMMUNISTS (the tradition of the THIRD INTERNATIONAL!!!) told me it was wrong to make a fuss about overseas movements, or at least anything outside of the Pacific region

Dan Nexon@dhnexon.net

But the fact is that modern liberal, center-left, and left political movements are *insufficiently* transnationalized — especially when compared to the transnational right. We are *behind* the curve. Our leaders are behind the curve.

The main problem with these guys is that there's an opaque and bureaucratic process to get in (understandable considering how many maniacs and wastrels they let in in the past and then couldn't get out again without a death struggle) fourth.international/en/166

"personalist, tight social networks, which aren’t a progressive social form" This is true, and consider what it means that most actually existing communist groups or even anarchist communities are personalist, tight social networks

Wannabe Apparatchik@apparatchikwannabe.bsky.social

the problem is even deeper, i think, in that a lot of it comes from a “crunchy” impulse, “we feel like there’s something inhuman and uncomfortable about modernity”, and the root of those feelings is that we naturally live in personalist, tight social networks, which aren’t a progressive social form

The increasingly decadent global oligarchy seriously believes in Triumph of the Will, aka the Power of Positive Thinking, aka Prosperity Gospel, aka magick. It works in the same way Wile E. Coyote can defy gravity until he looks down.

"In 2019, as Sam Altman was leaving his role leading the tech incubator Y Combinator to become CEO of OpenAI, he wrote a blog post extolling the virtue in founders with “too much self belief … almost to the point of delusion.” We need to ask why we as a society keep getting got, and how to stop.

>we have a radical new system to replace capitalism >is it a new system or is it feudalism? >it’s a good system sir *looks inside* >it’s feudalism

Dr. Samantha Hancox-Li@sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com

looked at in longer perspective, it's striking how much this resembles the premodern system of exclusion, rents, and personalist connections, which was--and this part's important--radically worse than the modern system of impersonal rules and general taxation

Zohran shows the way: YIMBY + rent control. The whole thing about "building affordable housing" is a chimera, because if you push the people saying this they don't want *cheaply constructed* housing, which is the only thing that can mean from the supply side. Build housing: make it affordable.

Subsidized housing is a good thing and we should publicly fund it instead of relying on kludgy, counterproductive market mechanisms that trade broad middle class housing affordability for a handful of means-tested units.

Seeing a disquieting trend of Western libs or even Leftists prioritizing "do they support Ukraine" in appraising a foreign politucal movement. 100% yes Ukraine must win, but you don't want to sound like a diaspora Zionist taking about Israel. This too is campism.

(Lula was still lesser evil, though, since it's not like Bolsonaro is not pro-Russian too anyway)

"Family posts describe a pattern of the 3-year-old excelling against older children in the league, which they say prompted repeated complaints about fairness." There's that word, fairness. Trans folk told you that a trans ban is racist, and here's the proof.

They called the cops on this 3-year-old Black boy because he was kickin the white kids' ass on the soccer field.

It’s funny how western leftists seem amazed at features of Asian societies as public infrastructure that is quickly repaired or public transportation that is always on time without seeming to realize that the secret sauce is worker exploitation

I was today years old when I realised that the French use the same verb for counting votes as they do for skinning an animal

I keep wondering how long the TERF menace can be held off in this country by the presence of older MPs who remember serving with Georgina Beyer

Mikhail Gorbaechev@mikhailgorbaechev.bsky.social

I think Sarah McBride's presence in the caucus has been extremely important in preventing Labourization because most of these people are kind of dumb and she can explain what's going on in small words.

The reason this, like many other things, isn't a bigger scandal, is: the media like the National Party and want them to stay in power forever.

David Cormack@davidcormack.bsky.social

I don't understand why this isn't a bigger scandal. The govt has lied to us and covered up that they're gonna... What? Fuck up some Marlborough Sounds beaches for their dumb fuck lng project? Thank fuck for Māni and the Post. This is outrageous. www.thepost.co.nz/nz-news/3611...

The tricky thing is that people *do* want all these good things... *and* they want a National government to enact them. Because they want these good policies, but not the woofters and lanyard wearers and tree-huggers to be in charge.

'We tell pollsters we want effective climate action, redistributive tax reform, strengthened democracies and a much more functional welfare state. These things are not fringe ideas, despite what we keep being told. They’re mainstream.' #NzPol

Lew@lewsos.bsky.social

There are real stakes in play. Candidates who try to bullshit everyone during an election campaign where everyone has video are just not fit to serve The Greens & TPM handled this well for their context. Leoni did not, so Hipkins was forced to handle it www.stuff.co.nz/politics/361...

The reactions to this have been utterly deranged, and here is one example. Can anyone who can actually remember 10 years ago, let alone the day before yesterday, tell me what's wrong with this reaction?

"Charisma" is an interesting question because it's not a real thing. It's something attributed to a person by onlookers. If we're talking about 1993, Jim Anderton was reported by the media as suddenly having grown "charisma" by talking like a sensible person on Election Night, unlike Mike Moore

I see an interesting cultural difference between the centre-Left in my country and elsewhere. American Dem voters: - bad poll result - redoubles effort to get the vote out in the last stretch NZ Labour voters: - bad poll result or even bad media coverage - give up and doom with 2 weeks to go

What a surprise. Tyler is one of the people I keep seeing Being Very Normal about W. Stancil. Just like sad trombone guy, these people out themselves; it's never about "this one poster is bad and deserves a pile on", they JUST LOVE PILE ONS for their own sake. Because they're fun.

Case in point. A 9-follower (!) account comes out of nowhere to give an inaccurate history of St*ncil, I can only assume because they namesearch him. Also thinks "dogpiling is bad" means the same thing as "never criticize". These people are not normal.

ITT, a lot of sincere and polite activists honestly argue that "creating revulsion" towards other members of your political coalition is an effective means of behavioural change. This is distinct from "bullying works", but seems to assume that "revulsion" is something you can switch on and off.

neuse river hag@neuseriverhag.bsky.social

youtubers, streamers, podcasters, etc are always on this beat bc they don't know how anything works & know that if they say something like this, their audiences will lap it up now & also 3 years later when they point to total gay commie revolution not happening and go "see? i was right!"

Anyone who has read about dynamics in an abusive relationship - and its expanded version, a cult-like group - knows that "revulsion" and other emotional states are their own psychic reward, that people bully/abuse others *because it's fun to do so* and seek rationalizations for it afterwards

The St*ncil case is a good example that "creating revulsion" towards to other people in your coalition: a) only makes their opinions worse; b) leads to a "rachet" effect where, if the target doesn't "submit", the rhetorical intensity increases until people are calling for their tires to be slashed

The good folks at LC will probably find this comparison amusing, but this is the classical Marxist explanation of why you need working-class democracy where *activity* and *consequences* are brought together. Workers become fit to be the ruling class through the experience of making things happen.

Liberal Currents@liberalcurrents.com

"Power clarifies. Unless, of course, it is power without accountability. Power unchecked yields a different kind of stupidity: 'Your life is just a series of your own preferences. In terms of cognitive impairment it’s probably like being kicked in the head by a horse every day.'"

And this is the difference between classical Marxism and populism. Populism bases itself on the state of mind of the masses "right now" - the state of mind of people who have no experience of their choices mattering, so they either expect Big (Br)Other to fix things or just smash shit up.

This comes in two forms: - Right-wingers taking the "content of his character" line from _I Have A Dream_ out of context to trash modern anti-racism; - Left-wingers taking the dig at "white moderates" out of _Letter from a Birmingham Jail_ to justify sectarianism

Im not sure I agree with this, because all the Leftists I know who have gone all-in on studying the Right over the last 20 years are right now becoming political nihilist and passive because that fash shit is now the mainstream. Like, their lives work failed and they have no hope.

Dr. Guy Incognito DDS@guyincognitodds.bsky.social

Typical thing for a historian of the right to say, but the left in the U.S. desperately needs to spend less time studying itself and far more time studying the right.

There is a section of the activist Left whoich blocs with the NIMBY Right because od negative polarization against neoliberals, and frankly conservative social preferences. The problem is that a real section of the poor is authentically NIMBY/conservative because all change is suspicious
