Don't want to be rude so I'll leave this pinned. I'm curating my Following feed to contain less politics contents and things I want to see/read, so I apologise if I unfollow you or don't follow back. I'm trying to use less social media and curate it for my tiny brain to consume it. (1/3)

Kinda hate to put football analytics on pause, but it's hard to see a future where I work in football anymore now that I'm back in Southeast Asia cause of a lack of opportunities, and also having to get my own life back on track. Time to find another dream!

I'll go quiet for longer and more often to focus on sorting out irl stuff, but I'll try to post football stuff every now and then, or whenever my mind is inspired to make something. Sorry if I don't make as much football stuff moving forward as I used to ๐Ÿ˜…

Starting a mega thread where I link interesting, analytics-related jobs from across NWSL, MLS, and abroad. Will do my best to highlight important parts of the posting, plus list salary if it's included. โฌ‡๏ธ

@tifofootball.bsky.social used to call Allan Saint-Maximin and Adama Traore as 'dribbly-boys'. They went away a few years ago, but with a modern implementation of the W-M formation, they are back and better than ever!

So I kinda vaguely said why traditional wingers are back, which is because of the 3-2-5/W-M formation. But it's more so because the latest adaptation sees wingers stay wider and relies less on full-backs inside the final 3rd. Thus, wingers have more space and license to dribble with the ball.

Currently going on a run of retro football games cause the state of modern football games feels shambolic, and I'm wondering if PES 21 deserves to be in the top 5 PES editions of all time.

Kinda make me feels sympathised for Sports Interactive and Football Manager devs a bit more because PES and Konami went through this exact same situation back in 2014, and the game didn't get better until maybe 2017 or 2018. The curse of yearly-released games I guess.

The state of Asian football stats smh... I really need to get that MAT dashboard done asap, don't I ๐Ÿ˜”

Did I spend 2 hours at night on Figma and painstakingly made a mockup of the Arch Linux plugins that I want to make in Lua? Yes I did. Did I also spend 2 hours looking at open source F1 data API? Yes I also did. Now to the harder part ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Might have to end my friendship with Python soon cause I'm starting to like Lua and Luau a lot Very Python-esque, easy to learn, yet OOP programming feels a lot easier and makes more sense

Fernando Alonso has been staring at me and constantly disappointed by my lack of progress while I work on more functions for the plugins. Life is good aga

In the spring of 2019, a young man named Khvicha Kvaratskhelia lived alone at Lokomotiv Moscowโ€™s training ground. All these years later, Khvicha's hustle has paved a new path for a faded icon: the Eastern European creator. The long read: bit.ly/dribbling-in...

Finally moved to Arch Linux and finally understood when people say Arch gives you a kernel and maybe a shell built on top, then you're on your own with everything else. But damn, it's so good just to have an OS that I have full control over and figure things out on the way without using AI.

Kinda tempted to learn Lua and build a Football Manager-inspired UI + some football stats plugins, but I gotta complete the web dashboard first ๐Ÿ˜ญ

TL;DR: The answer to that tweet is no, football analytics isn't solved. In fact, there's a lot more work to be done now that tracking data is entering the public sphere and different challenges faced by the industry. To borrow 2 quotes from last year's MIT Sloan Conference:

This summer, MLS teams spent a record-breaking amount of money on player transfers: $188 million. That's a 65% increase year-over-year and takes the yearly total to over $410 million, twice what it was in 2022. I dug into the data for @theguardian.com: www.theguardian.com/football/202...

theguardian.comMLSโ€™s transfer window and the spending line that keeps going upSummer spending across the leagueโ€™s 30 clubs has ballooned. Here are three takeaways from the leagueโ€™s transfer window

Also I don't understand the 'watching sports is more fun with AI' part. From a fan's perspective, it even makes it boring cause you're constantly focusing away from the game. Tracking data is only useful and fun for the fans if it's being displayed in a fun and engaging way, not like that image.

"Won't someone think of the end users for all these new tech?" Probably not a dominant thought for these tech/AI bros when they try to build a product to get investments from venture capitals and private equities while hitting none of the actual useful use cases.
