Mourinho’s plan comes together as Real Madrid relaunch with clásico statement | Sid Lowe

dlvr.itMourinho’s plan comes together as Real Madrid relaunch with clásico statement | Sid LoweIt was just like old times as José Mourinho ended a night at the Camp Nou with a knee slide and three points José Mourinho had already done the por qué?, the printout and the press conference no-show in under 100 days. Now he’s done a knee slide too, and in the perfect place: back where it all began and where it can all begin again. When Kylian Mbappé scored the first in the clásico on Sunday night, Real Madrid’s manager hardly moved, sitting in the shadow of the bench, but when the striker got the second to win it with time running out, that was different. Mourinho leapt into the light, throwing himself to the grass, the knees of a 63-year-old’s trousers muddy as a schoolboy’s, stuck his tongue out and pumped his fists. He does so love it when a plan comes together. To the right of him, the bench was emptying, subs joining the players in sprinting towards the south-west corner. As they leapt about, dodging the bottles thrown towards them from the end, way, way up in the furthest corner and stuck inside a glass box like a bunch of David Blaines, the small group of Madrid fans who had come were going mad. In the main stand, a thousand phones were raised. And 600km west, back in Boadilla, Thibaut Courtois was watching his teammates from the sofa at home, presumably wrapped in a blanket and cradling a cup of Lemsip. On the morning of the biggest game there is, he awoke with flu, forced to miss out. Continue reading...

Watching coverage of the Brazilian elections is surreal: the father of one of the candidates tried to launch a coup against the other, even plotting his murder, and yet the race is often being covered as "spiky new kid on the block meets doddering old challenger".

dlvr.itSergio Camello: ‘Rayo is the last team standing – it’s football from another time’Rayo Vallecano’s fascinating forward on his unique club, his musical passions and the goalscoring form that puts him among Europe’e elite An 11-year-old, second-hand VW Beetle with more than 300,000km on the clock pulls over on Clown Fofó Street in the heart of Vallecas. The music goes off, the Smiths silenced, and out gets Sergio Camello: movie aficionado with 156 films reviewed, part-time photographer, some-time drummer, Olympic gold medallist and the second top goalscorer in Europe’s top five leagues. Engulfed in graffiti, stickers covering the glass between metal bars in red, a single step up from the street, the small door into Rayo Vallecano’s ground is locked, but in 64 hours it will open for the first time this season. “It’s my home, it’s Vallecas,” Camello says. Forced to abandon their place, on Saturday at 2pm the tenants return. With the Madrid council declaring Estadio de Vallecas unsafe, unfit for purpose, Rayo’s home matches have instead been played in Leganes, out of the city to the south and boycotted by fans. Walking the neighbourhood that is proud of its social conscience, its community and its team, Camello can’t wait to be back again. And not just for the football; maybe not even for the football. “It’s the pre-game, the post-game, the people,” he says, passing the bar where they’ll be waiting for him after, same as always. WASHINGTON (AP) — Pentagon says the firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan will be livestreamed in December. Just find myself muttering variations of "this can't be real" over and over again.

Santi Denia’s career as Czechia coach started against the two teams he knows best — Spain and England. 15 years at the RFEF; those were his kids winning the World Cup. 23 of the 26 had played with him. And England, he insists, are *this close. Interview: www.theguardian.com/football/202...
