A reminder, because it is almost that time of year: More children are killed by cars on Halloween than any other day of the year, by far. www.vox.com/future-perfe... If you're a parent, I hope you'll do what you can to keep kids safe. If you're driving on Saturday, PLEASE exercise extra caution.

Sad shoutout to this tweet that I used to share with every PhD student whose code and data were a mess, but is unfortunately in the bad place

Very specific-thirtysomething-academic-coder-blues: helping a PhD student with a topic that you also struggled with at their level, so digging out all the resources that you were smart enough to bookmark at the time! …but they’re mostly lost to link-rot

All of this is intended by design to keep things as cartoonishly simple and intelligible as possible, A) because you want other people to easily understand your code and workflow B) future-you is basically another person and both sets of people, with all the love in the world, are idiots.

oh, another: in the projects directory I have both 'archive' and 'scratch' folders. If a project goes dormant it usually moves to the archive rather than deleting if I MIGHT need it later If I'm low-stakes screwing around with a new tool or idea, it goes in scratch Keeps 'in progress' manageable

Oh, and for any raw data files that are huge and so live in an external drive for local jobs or a data partition on a remote, I'll typically have my raw_data area organised similarly, then use a symlink between the project's raw data directory and the real raw data directory, or

if it's something that may be troubleshot locally but ran remotely, perhaps have the data-ingestion script begin by checking the machine/environment it's on and then set the raw_data path. Could also do this with the processed data, usually don't need to so keep it in the project for simplicity.

Processed data should always be a product of the raw data being manipulated by the code in the code subdirectory, so re-generating it is simple and it’s nicely reproducible

My usual best practices that I try to adhere to /project_name .../scripts/ .../scripts/01_data_wrangling.R .../scripts/02_brief_description.R .../data/ .../data/raw_data/ .../data/processed_data/ .../data/processed_data/01_data_wrangling_outputs/ .../data/processed_data/02_brief_description/ etc

(Additional tip: within the data directory ALWAYS have a subdirectory for raw_data and a subdirectory for processed_data. The raw data should never ever get edited, only read, no exceptions ever. The processed data can be deleted and regenerated as required.)

The approval of the Jackdaw gas field is an environmental catastrophe. But also, side-eyeing this from an industry which has lost THIRTY THOUSAND JOBS in the past five years, what the absolute fuck is this justification?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

There’s a certain irony to seeing this shortly after my wife and I resolved to make more of an effort to speak German at home, so our dual-nationality kids grow up able to communicate better with their loved ones, and eventually live in whichever home country they choose

Anyways, learning languages is only a 'waste of time' now if your sole objective is to be able to understand written texts. But that's a fairly revealingly small worldview

My German is fucking awful, unfortunately. I blame that at least in part on never having been exposed to it outside of lessons for more than a few days' visit at a time. But I can understand the level of German you'd speak with a toddler, and speak a lot of that too.

It’s ADHD awareness month and this year I’m continuing my noble tradition of remembering this fact over halfway through, with nothing planned for it at all. (I blame the ADHD)

Just had to drag my toddler from the playpark early as a nearby house has joined the village’s ‘6 months of unnecessary-but-cosy wood burning’ tradition and it was making my asthma majorly flare up. Looks like till the spring when I take her to the park I’ll be wearing a facemask. I hate this.

Man, this has upset me tbh. Last winter my kid was too young to spend much time at the park, but we’ve had a tonne of fun times there together over the recent warmer months. It was our go-to Daddy-daughter thing. Now I’ll need to wear an FFP3 there for months, and all for someone’s ‘cosy vibe’ bs.

A minority of houses in the UK legitimately need wood burners for heating. I can see that. Most of the people around me are just deeply worsening my lung-health for the cosy vibes, blissfully unaware that there’s any negative effects on others

Better regulation seems a mile away, and public knowledge of the health harms of burning is terrible. Props to groups like @mumsforlungs.bsky.social for trying to raise awareness, though what we really need is information-campaigns coming from government etc. bsky.app/profile/mums...

Clean Air Night is just over a month away - who's getting involved? Domestic burning is a major source of particle pollution in the UK - can you pledge to reduce your burning this Winter, if you have an alternative source of heat? More info at the link.
