for example, I may have to cut the fact that one of the first machine translation patents (1933, USSR) was by a guy called Petr Petrovich Troyanskii and the proposed machine involved dictionaries on moving belts www.jstor.org/stable/40009...
Congrats to @barkavi.bsky.social for submitting her PhD thesis! A year ago I had 6 PhD students who needed to submit their theses. All have now done so, which is great.
Please do not submit LLM-written papers to TACL! I appreciate many people (even high-school students) have success doing this with ARR, Neurips, and other mega-conf. But TACL reviewing is still almost all done by people, and LLM/AI slop is very unlikely to be accepted.
A raciolinguistic finding that has lived rent-free in my head for years is: People rate the exact same English audio as less intelligible when shown a brown person's face rather than a white face. In work led by Maya Nachesa, we see whether multimodal speech recognition models do the same 👀
The achievement of Serbian students overthrowing Aleksandar Vučić can't be overstated.
In 2024, they began protesting. In 2025, they transformed a protest movement into civil dissidence. In 2026, they became a political party — and two months later, crushed a corrupt state-entrenched authoritarian.

In 2021, archaeologists announced the discovery of the 3000 year old Egyptian city called "The Dazzling Aten" near Luxor.
I want to call your attention to a brick wall under the red arrow. It's 'serpentine' & a single brick wide, separating a housing complex from the road.
Why the odd shape?
For this episode of Ben Actually Reads The Documentation, we've discovered the documentation for dplyr's by/.by argument.
dplyr.tidyverse.org/reference/dp...
There's so many functions it works with — mutate, summarise, filter, slice
Avoids writing group_by() and ungroup() so often

Why wasn't this alt-text appearing in my #quarto PDF output?

It's correct for HTML, but for PDF you must do either

Find us at #EMNLP2026 to learn about narrative qualities of pretraining data! 🌟
📊 Via our Explorer tool, you can interact with 13M pretraining passages and 11 narrative dimensions, plus upload your own data for analysis: cls-lab.colorado.edu/tejo9855/dol...
We'd love to see what you discover! 👀
I'll be presenting our work on characterizing the narrative content of web-scale data at #EMNLP2026! @andrewpiper.bsky.social@elliottash.bsky.socialash.bsky.social@mariaa.bsky.social@emnlpmeeting.bsky.social
Would love to see you there!
📍 Hall H, Poster Session F
🕘 Tue Oct 27, 9:00-10:30
I'm on the faculty job market for Fall 2027 assistant professorship. I work on the science of AI/NLP evaluation, which is currently undergoing a crisis.
Get in touch! My research statement is public: vilda.net
'If human experience becomes the scarce part of education, who gets it?
This is where the analogy stops being an interesting exercise in market strategy and becomes a widening participation question.'
I love this idea, if anyone leaving #INLG2026 or otherwise in #NLP would like to go through papers from 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago looking for what's relevant to our work today 👀
#INLG2026 was a joy 🧡 Utrecht was lovely (if a little bike-dodgy 😅), and a conference at the national railway museum?! 🚂 kudos to the organizers, and thanks to those who stopped by our poster!
fun coincidence: Pitt colors🤝🏼NS trains! also, ordered a flat white & french toast in dutch sign language🤘🏼
Congrats to my students Iniakpokeikiye Thompson and Jawwad Baig for winning the "Best Evaluation" award at INLG. This is for their paper "One Feedback System Does Not Fit All:Localising Data-to-Text Driver Coaching for the UK and Nigeria"

We were overjoyed to host a record number of NLG fans in Utrecht in 2026 and to spend these exciting 5 days together! Looking forward to what 2027 has in store.

There is nothing about Musk as a person that isn't completely hack and forgettable. There's literally nothing new or novel about him, and all he's ever done is take credit for what his staff actually works on. He's a parasite.
Even now, the managing up stories I've heard...
Some TN counties used BMDs (touchscreen where it marks a paper ballot you then turn in) or DRE/VVPAT (counts straight from the touchscreen but also prints a paper trail). These are inferior to hand-marked optical scan ballots. Touchscreens can be poorly calibrated and have higher error rates.
Many years ago, I was working in rural Tanzania, there was a sick old woman who needed to go to clinic in town. But she had never been in a motor vehicle before, was terrified of them. She refused to get in the truck. In the end her daughter got her drunk, we drove her to clinic, and all was well
i am on a plane sitting next to a lady who looks 40ish and has informed me that this is her first time flying
she is visibly excited. she asked the flight attendant how much a soda costs and was happy to learn that drinks are free on airplanes. she's taking lots of pictures. i love this for her
Aberdeen is a nice place to live, near the sea, and very affordable, with a gorgeous campus. And that's before you get to the colleagues in the CS department! There are a lot of opportunities there to do good interdisciplinary work with folks in medicine, linguistics, religious studies, & much more!
Aberdeen CS is hiring a new (full) Professor! Basically a replacement for me, so especially interested in NLP people, but open to other CS fields as well. Closing date is 19 Nov. Feel free to ping me if you have any questions

Honestly, the only reason I haven't been jumping at every opportunity to stay at Aberdeen is family further south in Scotland and having a more established support network there. I still really value all my colleagues there and hope we continue to work together in the future

Scotland in general is great as well. Aberdeen is 2.5 hours from Edinburgh by train but also has its own international airport. You're in they're NE of Scotland with easy access to the highlands and nature
“Universities exist precisely because specialized knowledge matters. The further decisions move from those with the expertise, the more educational quality suffers, and the more students bear the consequences.”
And the best evaluation award goes to...
"One Feedback System Does Not Fit All:Localising Data-to-Text Driver Coaching for the UK and Nigeria" by Iniakpokeikiye Peter Thompson, Jawwad Baig, Ehud Reiter, Dewei Yi
Finally, the best demo paper is:
"PLeW-NLG: Interactive Exploration of Human Evaluation Data across NLG Tasks" by Fahime Same, Leonard W Sprague Jr, Francesco Cangemi
Best Long Papers (shared)
"Do as I Say, Not as You Do: Assessing Public Versus Practitioner Perspectives on the Development of Artificial Intelligence and Language Technologies" by Tyler Loakman, Chenghua Lin
Best Short Paper
"Do LLMs Make More Mistakes If They Do Not Believe the Input Data?" by Peter Kochelka, Aleš Manuel Papáček, Vojtěch Dvořák, Ondrej Dusek
And now to finish up the #GenChal session we get the results of the werewolf shared task, presented by Yoshinobu Kano at #INLG2026: Revealing Current Performance of LLMs in Multi-Agent and Long Logical Context by Automatically Playing the Werewolf Game As a Contest
The workshop was held just before the main conference with 7 long papers, 4 short papers, 6 papers without teams. This has been happening for 12 years now! In both Japanese and English
The gist of the task is to develop models for generating the final reports for shared tasks, with several decomposed subtasks. For more info, their website is here: uniagent.webis.de
