A strange thing as there are no restrictions on loading here, you can just stop outside the cycle lane and drop off your grocery delivery for free any time of day or night. Why wouldn’t a professional in a liveried vehicle understand this?

Hot on the heels of the UK’s first LTN to be “made permanent” with its only bus gate removed, introducing the UK’s first 7am to 7pm bus lanes where “you can still park and load in most locations” 🙃

The City of Edinburgh Council@edinburghcouncil.bsky.social

New bus lane times start Monday 12 October - Milton Road East to London Road - 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week. A trial to improve bus journey times and reliability. You can still park and load in most locations but some times will change.

Instead of simply delivering a school street, at some point local councillors decided to repurpose a bunch of the school playground to keep people from disturbing drivers, adding a TRIPLE railing just to make sure they don’t have to slow down as much.

We had one cyclist death in Glasgow where, when I was asked to look through the Gobike sent emails by lawyers, I found my predecessor had called out the exact danger at that exact junction. The needed work didn't happen until after a woman was dead.

A small number of angry drivers / pandering politicians had enough incentive to get the council to remove a years-old quiet neighbourhood scheme. The same concentration of power doesn’t exist in the diffuse body of local people who would like not to have overturning SUVs in their street

Blackford Safe Routes@blackfordsaferoutes.co.uk

What happens when you create a high-traffic neighbourhood by removing the modal filters on the Braid Estate… SUVs end up on their side Junction of Braid Rd and Hermitage Dr. Around school pick up time, Thursday 1st Oct

Just to put this in context Edinburgh airport alone offers more than a million seats on transatlantic flights per year, roughly ten times more than the entire saving from walking and wheeling

Walk Wheel Cycle Trust Scotland@wwctrustscot.bsky.social

🧵 1/2 It's #ScotClimateWeek By cycling, walking and wheeling instead of driving, the people of Scotland save 93, 000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) annually.

Luxury retailers want taxpayers to fund a 20% tax break for foreign tourists. They paid consultancy Cebr to claim this will raise £2.6bn for the UK. That convinced Sadiq Khan and Kemi Badenoch. But it's false: a free lunch. Four basic errors mask a £600m loss. Thread:

With the Strait of Hormuz closed, Iraq has resorted to moving its oil across the desert to Syria in hundreds of tanker trucks, in true Mad Max style. From there, it will be shipped to worldwide markets.

As a brand new school, this should have been significantly more accessible without cars. Instead, the traffic it generates practically guarantees that I don’t take my kids except in the car, or if we have time for a 40 min round trip on foot.

I cycled to work at the Shore via leith walk the other day (I usually go Holyrood park - Easter road) and at every light there were 15 cyclists waiting to go up the way. It's brilliant, love the voi bikes contribution to this!

Edward Tissiman@edtiss.bsky.social

An insight into cycling trends - the introduction of Voi bikes has added about 500 additional cyclists per day to Leith Walk; the tram closure added another 250 at the peak. The Voi effect is much larger at the weekend, while the inverse is true for the tram.

Scotland’s pavement parking law can only be enforced if your *tyre* is on the pavement, so you can not be ticketed for this, which is not lost on a growing number of people 🧑‍🔬

In theory you could be ticketed for parking on the zigzags, but this is so rarely enforced that I’m not sure on a given day if even a single NIP is sent out

Edinburgh, where a six lane road doesn’t have room for active travel, but somehow the bus lane is storing a single car, and more than half the pavement can be used by a business as “permitted development” Criticism handled by gaslighting you to the Lothian Rd Boulevard project, coming around 2045

I've long moaned that when the tram was installed, no parallel cycle track was laid to allow "park and ride" into the city by bike. Will this new access road be a private car frenzy which only embeds this further, or an uncharacteristic departure that also provides active travel connectivity? Ha!

Lest we forget, goods vehicles are specifically excluded from enforcement under Scotland’s pavement parking law

sbarlster@sbarlster.bsky.social

Build it and they will come. Even a path like the Leith Walk one! ⤵️⤴️↩️↪️ 😜

Spring cleaning and found this from Etape Caledonia 2016... the only time I tried this route as I found it too cramped with other riders. 21st of ~3000, simpler times!

Although covering up the traffic light with a sign is particularly bad, I don’t like these low down lights in general, even someone standing there has the same effect

Katie McDonald@katiemcdonald.bsky.social

Schrodinger's traffic lights at the bottom of Leith Walk - can cyclists still be accused of jumping reds if there aren't lights to jump?

It’s even worse that it looks when you remember that the council are spending seven figures on a new bridge for private cars, instead of either closing it to cars (almost free) or spending a fraction on an active travel bridge instead

I have spoken to the Council, and they have confirmed Harrison Road will reopen to traffic and pedestrians in December.

“Meta-motonormativity” (I know it’s just a flavour of motonormativity)

Rachel Cunliffe@rmcunliffe.bsky.social

Yes, discussing damage done by cycling is fuelled by "motornomativity", incidents where cyclists hit pedestrians don't happen unless they're recorded (and if they're not recorded that means they don't matter), and if a cyclist runs a red light and hits someone it's because they didn't feel safe

They are doing a survey at the Astley Ainslie today and Saturday, counting the number of people who pass through it. If you want to ensure it stays open to the public now and once developed…then do pop by

Today I had an awful close pass by a taxi and, separately, used the pavement to go around a roadworks (local access maintained) so I could avoid half a mile on the A70. While the pavement was clear I did startle someone in their drive. Now I’m annoyed with myself, clearly in the wrong, but also…

.. why is Police Scotland the only force that refuses the dashcam portal? Why won’t we act against dangerous drivers? Why don’t we have presumed liability? Why is the council ripping out low traffic schemes? I know like, you can just walk your bike if you’re afraid of the road, but systemic problems

The most annoying thing is, normally I react to road danger by just flipping some journeys to the car. Driving a big diesel near a school isn’t great but it’s not alarming. Instead I’ve basically pushed my fear of being smeared onto someone else, however carefully I did it. Feeling villainous :/

This is where all cyclists would have to travel if it turns out, due to rising costs and a strained public purse, that single-tracking the Roseburn tram beside a cycle route doesn’t have such good economics as a double track replacing the whole path..

Simon Christie@thebonnieloon.bsky.social

This crash is where cyclists would be expected to cycle while the Roseburn Path was under construction for the trams. Maybe, just maybe not everyone who objected to the Roseburn proposal weren’t NIMBY’s and just wanted to stay alive while cycling this part of the city? news.stv.tv/east-central...

Imagine if Edinburgh councillors had widespread power to introduce congestion charging and road filtering schemes, and imagine if Labour took power and popped Scott Arthur in as transport convener. Instead of reopening rat runs, what could they have achieved for congestion, job creation & equality

Correct. The SNP, Tories and Lib Dems have worked together to block homes and jobs coming to Edinburgh... and we can all look forward to more congestion as a result. Story: www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/edinbur...

It seems that if we wanted to improve access to jobs there’s plenty of options. The proposed Sherriffhall scheme doesn’t even include segregated public transport or high quality active travel links, IIRC

From memory there aren’t any school streets schemes in Pilton and, apart from the Roseburn path that the tram would ironically destroy, it’s also a wasteland of dangerous traffic conditions. Plenty of opportunities for Labour to invest in

I don’t really want to challenge local politicians on the deprivation front but my first thought was, imagine if the tram is built, squeezes out Lothian bus provision, and then later councillors decide to stop paying the young people’s travel concession on the tram. Too far fetched? It seems nuanced

The hospitality industry are back lobbying for a VAT cut They don't mention the cost: £12bn They don't mention who gets the £: ❌ The smallest most vulnerable businesses? Get nothing ❌ Consumers? Prices won't fall ✅ McDonald's gets £400m. Big chains are big winners 🧵:

💯 support the parents here. It’s been longer than a decade. I was the first parent council chair in 2007 when my oldest son was in P1 (he’s 24 now) and the campaign was already 2 years old at that stage. The speed at which some vehicles pass the school is appalling. Safety measures long overdue

The council has these things down to a fine art. Yes you *could* have some basic road safety measures outside a school, but it's going to take you a huge amount of effort and your kids will almost be finished by the time a spade hits the ground, so are you sure you want to really bother?

I did have a look at recent pedestrian deaths last night and it is shocking. It is almost invisible - many of the deaths don't even get reported in the local news. Here are a few of the recent ones:

I don’t see the outrage, the horror the posts, the call for change about driver and car carnage. Just silence about the 29000 KSIs every year. Every year. Here’s a taste from the last couple of days… bsky.app/profile/sbar...
