On today’s bike bus, we spare a thought for those on our sister bike bus at George Watson’s, who now have to suffer increased traffic and crashes on their way to school - their route follows where this happened
What happens when you create a high-traffic neighbourhood by removing the modal filters on the Braid Estate…

"A terrible deal"
Indeed. Some of us have been saying this for a very long time

Meanwhile Edinburgh spent £1.6m on the Dalmahoy junction, to enable drivers to go fast - a rural road junction, with no significant active travel, and where a speed limit reduction would have sufficed

“When mayors in other cities ask me how #Copenhagen afforded to invest in its cycling networks, I ask them how on earth they have been able to afford highway projects. We invested in bike lanes because that was the cheapest option.”
What the world can learn from Copenhagen’s cycling revolution.
Jan’s freedom is now only limited by the lack of safe cycling facilities
Let’s build protected cycle lanes and low-traffic neighbourhoods to enable the huge latent demand for cycling from the Jans, the kids, the families, the older people, and the less-confident

After 3 years off his bike, Jan is cycling again thanks to a free e-trike loan through our Connecting Communities programme in East Lothian. Jan's story shows what's possible with the right support.

“Survey after survey has shown that business owners overestimate how many customers drive to their stores vs walking or biking. In a 2012 Los Angeles study, more than half of the store owners on the bike-laned part of the boulevard thought most of their customers drove. The actual number was 15%.”
“The reality is that the biggest danger to pedestrians is overwhelmingly drivers of motor vehicles. On average, more pedestrians are killed each year by cows than by cyclists”
New Critical Mass this Saturday!
As always it will start at 2pm from Middle Meadow Walk.
For this Halloween special we encourage you to dress up how ever you want! 🦇 🎃
saw two kids on campus crash into each other on bikes today. they were both like "you okay?", complimented each other's bikes, and rode off on their separate ways. beautiful stuff man, you don't see that kind of thing happen when cars get into accidents
Complete and utter BS that shows people like Healey have no clue about the shattering impact climate breakdown will have on the UK and its population
The climate doesn't give a sh*t about where CO2 is released to the atmosphere, whether the UK or abroad

This was the Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route this morning. At least the drivers aren’t speeding and ignoring the Give Way road markings when they’re at a standstill.
We hope the Budget tomorrow will mark a shift away from expensive road expansion where the case is weak, towards a transport system that offers better value for taxpayers, more choice for communities and a more sustainable future.

When we design city centres for people, families can enjoy being outdoors and people of all ages can get around safely.
Less motor traffic. More life on our streets.

It's a great shame that RNIB chose the call for enforcement rather than calling for safe alternative routes for cycling which would also help disabled folks who cycle.
Time to get out of the accessibility silos.
Almost 1km of London’s Oxford Street became completely pedestrianised yesterday, with cars, buses, taxis and bikes banned.
But what needs to happen to make it an accessible experience for blind and partially sighted people?
Here's some things we'd like to see.
Traffic signs can only be placed next to a road by a traffic authority (the Council), light rail operator or harbour authority. Doesn't matter if the signs are "official". (Part V, Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984). Councils have powers to remove unauthorised signs.
I don’t think the council needs 12 months of monitoring to see how dangerous a decision it was to remove the modal filters in the Braid Estate @stephenjenkinson.bsky.social
How the fuck does a serious assault resulting in life threatening injuries & then fleeing the scene not merit a custodial sentence?

“That doesn’t matter”. “He was blocking my way”.
Hedley clearly feels vindicated in his actions. No wonder, after the sheriff failed to jail him, or even ban him from driving.

We need the council to make rules about interruptions to cycle lanes. The CYCLISTS DISMOUNT signs - half blown down - placed *just* before the works up and down Leith Walk aren't particularly useful. How about ramps onto the road on either side?
📣
@jackrmcaldwell.bsky.social informed us that:
🚧 Next week, the west end of Dalmeny Street (and the Leith Walk cycle lane) will be closed to traffic for a number of weeks until (as of writing) November 14th.
💧 This is to allow Scottish Water to repair the sewer underneath the street.

So this appeared in the primary school playground, I asked the guy about it. Seats 4 kids plus home riding. How far away do you live? 3 minutes on the bike, 20 minutes walking. So to & fro twice a day, 12 minutes or 80 minutes a day. He smiled. @tomflood.bsky.social@rideleicester.bsky.social
It’s so tiring the way every penny of #ActiveTravel funding has to be fought for, and then fought to be retained.
Every penny spent on walking and cycling is returned fivefold. Every penny spent on roads will struggle to break even.
@libdemcyclewalkwheel.org.uk@greenlibdems.org.uk
The local MP said he would lobby the government to change it's funding rules so active travel money did not have to be spent on infrastructure projects like this.

Well, who'd have thought?
"the [world's] richest 0.1%...... are heavily invested in disaster preparedness, recovery and reconstruction – a market that is projected to grow from $70bn to $92bn a year by 2029"
Another win - win for the parasitic super-rich

Children have very little say in the air they breathe. But they're very welcome to have a say here! Help yours write a message to Andy Burnham asking for clean air.
#AirPollution is the second leading risk factor for death in children under five in the UK. Let's get our new PM to change this.

Victim blaming season is back, alongside darker evenings and mornings.
But perhaps it’s time to recognise that like “cities aren’t loud; cars are loud”, our roads aren’t dangerous by themselves. It’s the motor vehicles on them that create the danger and that perhaps it’s time to address the source.
It’s a crazy that so many people who don’t really have the money to spend will have a car on finance where they pay over £500 a month before getting to fuel, service, tax & insurance. It’s a lifestyle choice and you really shouldn’t have a car you can’t afford
Thanks for adoption info. Yeah surely if every side road had signage like this pavements would just become even more cluttered. It stood out as unnecessary unless I’m missing something?
“Having high-speed rail is now seen as a requirement of 21st-century nationhood.
With cars being problematic in so many ways, high-speed trains seem to have been blessed with good great fortune: they are beautiful, fast, elegant, modern and environmentally friendlier."
@christianwolmar.bsky.social
Just out of frame of this lifted monstrosity are dozens of children playing in a public space. A grown man is cutting through a plaza just to peacock, yet the biggest safety panic in our city right now is about e-bikes.
Does anyone know if these private signs are allowed on the public pavement? Surely the Highway Code gives pedestrians priority at a side road so not needed? Or a painted zebra would be allowed on the private side road?

The idea of riding with Middle Schoolers off-campus can be 😱scary.
But the reward is huge.
They deserve to explore their community and there is no safer or better way than a biking field trip.
Absolutely mental that you can get your driving licence at 17 (as I did) and never face any kind of check as to your driving capability or habits until you're 70 (or whatever it is). You could be the worst driver for 50 years, in charge of a two tonne machine that kills, totally unregulated.
This is the first video I planned from Lyon but the last to release because it took more research and planning.
It’s a really interesting story — take a look if you haven’t seen it yet!
There are a lot of good "Urbanism" YouTube channels (it's one of the best things about YouTube, I think, and a great way of educating folks about cities).
@ohtheurbanity.bsky.social has been doing great work on the politics of urban change.
