🗳️ The EEA election results are in! Congratulations to our newly elected Vice-President, Filip Matějka @cerge-ei.bsky.social, and Council members Sarah Auster, Helena Skyt Nielsen & @david-schindler.de A big thank you to everyone who stood for election!

First, @economist.com interviews Elon Musk without pushing back much on his outrageous claims; now they're giving Alice Weidel a platform. For an outlet that supposedly cares about facts, I find it very hard to tolerate this reality distortion, e.g., that "our crime rate has been skyrocketing".

The Economist@economist.com

The populist-right politician has a habit for rhetorical judo. Asked for signs that Vladimir Putin wants peace with Ukraine, she throws the question back at us. But behind the bluster lurks a skilled political manager

Dutch policy makers: listen carefully!

This is about publishing in economics journals but I found it fascinating and probably applicable in other fields/areas- about why/how two papers asking the same question with the same answer might have very different landing spots in terms of a journal jasonmfletcher.substack.com/p/how-to-wri...

Very excited to be traveling to @insead.bsky.social today for the 2026 SIOE Conference. While looking forward to the academic exchanges, I look with concern at the wildfires in the area that destroy nature and threaten people's livelihoods. Grateful to everyone who put their lives at risk.

One of our job market candidates at Tilburg University had an offer withdrawn very late by the institution's rector because Tilburg is not ranked in the top 200 in the QS ranking. All of this after they assured our candidate that the rector's approval would be a formality... This is frustrating...

First they threaten the University to switch all undergraduate programs to Dutch. And when universities appease by abandoning some English language programs they do a 180... Turncoats... I have no other words...

"We're shocked... Absolutely shocked... That you're actually doing the thing we asked you to do..." (While CDA wasn't in the government, they were part of this political consensus meandering through the Hague that Dutch education had some unspecified benefits)

Tilburg University offers competitive pay, substantial fringe benefits, and beneficial tax laws may allow you to claim a substantial part of your salary tax-free. You'll be placed within a highly active group of applied microeconomists, which are all genuinely nice people!

Finally, you get to live in the Netherlands! I recently said to a friend: The Netherlands ruins other countries for you. Because if you've been here once, you'll never want to be anywhere else. Speaking Dutch in daily life is not necessary as everyone speaks English very well. Join us!

You'll be working with me on several research projects that are funded by my current Dutch Research Council Vidi Grant. If you're interested in studying political preferences and/or racial attitudes using methods of causal inference, this may just be for you!

Utrecht University abolishes its English language bachelor's program in economics and replaces it with a Dutch one. They told staff (~30% international) the week before Christmas. Layoffs seem likely now. Unwarranted lobotomy is the only word I can find for it... dub.uu.nl/en/news/econ...

This is all due to nationalist pressure from The Hague to reduce the number of international students. With this decision, Utrecht gives in to this pressure. The independence of universities has been at risk for years. The flood gates are open now...

I had temporarily suspended all US travel after news emerged of how some fellow Germans and fellow academics were treated at the US border. If this passes, I won't travel to the United States before it is repealed. This saddens me as I miss out on meeting friends and colleagues...

All travelers from ESTA countries (yes the ones on visa waiver programs) will have to disclose 5 years of social media + huge amounts of personal data to enter the US now. All US academic associations should now meet outside the US if we want to meet our international colleagues.

A poll from the journal Nature found that 75% of researchers in the U.S. are considering leaving the country. That includes a man who’s been dubbed the "Mozart of Math." (This PBS story on the scientific brain drain is heartbreaking & ominous for medicine, imo.) www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLvO...

It's Election Day and polling stations are set up on campus. I hope that sanity prevails this time in this insane world and the Netherlands gets a government the country deserves: one that invests in education and innovation.

I just received an email informing us about safety measures to take when traveling. Five years ago, I would not have imagined seeing these countries named together: "Countries classified as high risk in terms of knowledge security are: China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, and the United States."
