People struggling financially have voted predominantly for the AfD in recent elections. Not in Berlin. The Left put socializing corporate landlords on the ballot, and won the election and this group.

Someone has been emitting an awful lot of carbon to send me emails I don't read. This morning, from 4 email accounts (work & personal), I added up 177,737 unread emails. It's taken many years of effort to build to that. Still, if you send me an email and I don't reply, maybe try again, eh?

It’s Plover Appreciation Day and we are Plover-whelmed by their round fluff, smol squeaks & fast feets. 🏝️ Want to be a shorebird ploverachiever? Keep their habitats healthy by picking up trash & plastic, keeping pets leashed on the beach, & observing them from a safe distance. Plover and out!

Reporter on Bond Market: The yields have come back up since then. Have you talked to Bessent about another type of intervention.? Trump: The ultimate intervention is our military. And if we have to use that, we will.

No surprise the govt is having trouble getting the states on board with the gun buy-back. They’ve given much more attention to reducing anti-Semitism (often interpreted as stopping criticism of Israel) as the key response to the tragedy of Bondi. No real effort to build a consensus about guns.

Queenslanders: You’ve been asking “why is the world so terrible?” You’ve been thinking “I wish somebody would bring some joy back into my life.” Your wishes come true! Tomorrow night ABSOLUTELY SCANDALOUS is live in Brisbane! New Farm Bowls Club, 969 Brunswick St, New Farm Tues 4 August.

This pheasant coucal says “what do you mean…Gina Rinehart, Donald Trump, Barnaby Joyce & Pauline Hanson will all feature at the Absolutely Scandalous concert, at the BUG, New Farm Bowling Club, Brisbane, next Tuesday 4 August at 9pm? I’ll be there. But I’m not coming out from here earlier."

With songs from Gina Rinehart, Donald Trump, Pauline Hanson and Barnaby Joyce, to name just, er, four. Come to Brisbane and hear Absolutely Scandalous at the BUG, New Farm Bowls Club, next Tuesday 4 August.

ABC Australia has a YouTube series called “You Can’t Ask That” in which they bring in people from various marginalized/stereotyped groups who have volunteered to answer “inappropriate” questions. I’m sure they aren’t fully representative but they do foster empathy & I think they’re generally great.

15 hospitals. The simple economic concept of "opportunity cost".

Building submarines is the “pride of the nation” says Marles and SA Premier says the scale of the AUKUS investment is equal to 15 hospitals! I’ll take hospitals before submarines any day. Jobs building hospitals, homes, and dealing with global warming better than warmongering!

Kudos to Andreas 💐 Thousands of us at Google organized against the company’s Maven contract nearly 10 years ago, even though principles like this existed. We saw no hope that such principles would survive bottom line pressure—nor were they legally drafted to do so.

I work at Google DeepMind. This won't make me popular. But it's all public reporting: 2014: DeepMind reportedly sold to Google on conditions: no military use, independent oversight 2026: a Pentagon contract for "any lawful government purpose" Not one safeguard survived intact

This would seem relevant to Australian volunteer bushfire brigades as well. (Short video on the reasons for spiralling increases in software costs facing their US equivalents.)

This summer's record-setting heat wave is making wildfires in states like Colorado and Utah even worse. And to top it off, private equity investors are even price-gouging firefighters.

Resident of Mexico buys entire men's national team Rolexes as a thank you in advance of a win. FIFA makes team return watches because "bribes" are bad for football. FIFA having a problem with an honest gift & calling it a bribe is some comedic gold. brobible.com/sports/artic...

In a vaguely just world Infantino would be forced out for the Balogun decision and FIFA cleaned up from top to bottom. I won’t hold my breath

More than half of Australian businesses are now using AI. Associate Professor Darryn Snell says the debate about whether AI creates or destroys jobs misses the real question: what about worker voice and rights? AI is, first and foremost, a tool of management. futurework.org.au/news/which-w...

Yes, as JD Vance indicates, what Nixon did was absolutely nothing by Trump's standards, it would be a 12-hour news story, and you'd have to be crazy to think that criminal behaviour like that these days could lead to the president resigning.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

JD Vance: "I think Nixon's historical legacy is enjoying a bit of a renaissance, and deservedly so. I joked that if Watergate happened tomorrow, it would be like a 12 hours news story. The idea that it took down a presidency is crazy."

"Ben owns a farm. He employs 100 workers. His total payroll is $10 million/year. One day, he buys a mule, which provides the worker who uses it with a modest 10% productivity gain. Ben fires 99 of his workers and purchases 99 mules, expecting a 1,000% productivity gain..."

Who would be stupid enough to support such a thing. A these crazy times a far more sensible option is to strengthen ties with our Asian neighbours like China and Indonesia. USA can no longer be considered a rational reliable or trustworthy partner.
