Irish Gov is hosting its "International AI Summit" next week Even I was surprised by how industry heavy is it 83% of speakers are corporates, 0 independent experts, 1 union rep I'm not explicit about this in the piece -but- surely this is, at best, tone deaf? www.techpolicy.press/at-irelands-...

Yesterday was a bad day for nature as virtually no new funding was announced. The guessing and uncertainty as how Ireland's Nature Restoration Plan is to be funded goes on. www.irishtimes.com/your-money/2...

“The Government has simply given up on climate change. We’ve just come out of a summer with wildfires and record temperatures on the continent. The government’s response is to lower the cost of carbon and hike up public transport fares."

The numbers in the new Ending Fossil Power report from @stopclimatechaosie.bsky.social should be a wake-up call. 🇮🇪 Ireland is legally committed to cutting emissions by 51% by 2030 - but even if every existing policy is delivered, the EPA projects we’ll achieve just 25%.

AI is also going to force changes to anything where the friction is provided by a lengthy application process that can now be largely automated: employment tribunals, job applications, complaints procedures... As we're already seeing.
Some unintended consequences I suspect the rise of AI agents will create: 1. Restaurants that only take reservations by hand written letter, or more likely, don't take them at all. 2. Gigs where you can only buy tickets in person. 3. Businesses that operate without websites.

No rationale, research or evidence has been presented by the Justice Minister for his proposed changes restricting citizenship access. These plans that are simply aimed at making Ireland a hostile place for migrants who contribute so much to our economy and society. www.iccl.ie/news/citizen...

Have seen this Nature piece about the effects of X's algorithm mentioned again and it bears repeating; exposure to a right wing algorithm makes you - measurably and predictably - more right wing, even after you stop using it. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The AfD and Reform immigration policies are almost identical. There is no plausible reason for considering one far right and the other not.
Watching BBC News and it's striking to hear the presenters repeatedly referring to the AfD as "far-right" whilst refusing to ever say the same about the hundreds of actual masked blackshirts currently swarming British ports

There are 100s of reasons why this is a bad idea. Here are just some of them: - Reduced PT fares shown clearly to help protect against cost-of-living crisis💶 - Everybody loves the €2 fare💚 - It's made switching between buses much more attractive🚍 www.irishtimes.com/ireland/2026...

This has got to be one of the most outrageous moves by this government yet. They should hang their heads in shame. 🔥Cost of living crisis at home 🔥El Nino incoming 🔥Summer of wildfires 🔥Thousands missing after Nepal floods 🔥UN declares we're too late to keep warming at 1.5
We’re in the middle of a cost of living crisis, yet the Government throws commuters under the bus.... (sorry about the bad pun, but this is outrageous)

Not to be some wild-eyed innocent, but I think it should be slightly bigger news that The Lancet have crunched the numbers and found that Musk's USAID cuts will kill 14 million people. And that's just by 2030. That's 9,600 people a day, every day, until the next world cup rolls around.
New estimate of Elon Musk’s death toll just dropped www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...
