"Of all the books I have ever reviewed that purported to offer a serious thesis, this is without question the most deranged. If you are seeking a Christmas present for someone you really don’t like, give them a copy."

This is an enjoyable evisceration, which also makes some interesting points. It's rare to see a zero-star review at the best of times. That it has come from the Telegraph must really sting. www.telegraph.co.uk/books/non-fi...

The difference in the speed between our procurement process to buy weapons for Ukraine and our own weapons, is extraordinary...

New post: Today we have the second part of our very candid interview with Tony Radakin, who ran the UK armed forced 2021-2025. He talks about how we got into a mess over defence spending, why John Healey resigned, and how to fix military procurement. samf.substack.com/p/whitehall-...

Please God get rid of Netanyahu. I know the alternative isn't great but it's better than more of him with Ben Gvir and Smotrich.

So many interesting nuggets like this on the weeks before Russia's invasion when the UK was trying to assess their plans to defend themselves.

Delighted to publish first part of our interview with Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, former Chief of Defence Staff. Part One considers UK’s support for Ukraine, managing escalation with Russia, and lessons. Part Two is about MoD budget and procurement (£/free trial), samf.substack.com/p/when-russi...?

There's so much in there we've split it into two parts. Today's focuses on Ukraine, Russia and the lessons for the UK. Tomorrow is on spending and procurement.

Going to rephrase a post because it looked too definitive. On the voting so far in Brazil Lula seems to be doing better than expected. A win is much more possible than I expected with 10% of the vote in.

Projecting on the basis of votes in so far compared to the first round it does look like Lula will win. Can't quite believe it though.

Meanwhile saying nothing about Tory policy to quit ECHR which would also kick off a massive constitutional debate about Europe. It's the lamest argument.

Strange how widespread the framing of "do we want to talk about this again?" is on the Right Might buffer debate kicking off, but leaves them stranded once it does www.thetimes.com/article/6154...

I have more respect for hardcore leavers saying it would be bad for the UK than this pathetic "yes it was a mistake but we shouldn't talk about it because its polarising" BS. Lots of politics is polarising.

Bosnian Serb secessionist leader Dodik secured U.S. sanctions relief in October 2025 but in 2026 he appears to have lost his two chief patrons: Orban and Vucic. Even with his SNSD’s re-election weeks ago in Bosnia, this is a disastrous turn of events for the Banja Luka regime.

Incredible. Student List are candidates selected by groups of students to form an anti-corruption party. Another youth-led movement overthrowing an authoritarian government in Europe.

Serbia: The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS-EPP) has admitted defeat in today's parliamentary elections. The Student List (SL-*) has won a majority of votes. #Serbia #Srbija #Izbori2026

Going to be fascinating to see how it plays out. It's not really a party in a conventional sense, we don't know who the PM will be.

It's particularly impressive because Aleksandar Vučić was an Orban style autocrat who controlled much of the media. He worked for Slobodan Milošević.

As excellent as you’d expect from this source. Lots of drive-by humour. The bottom line is Trump admires Putin, wants to exploit the business opportunities in Russia, but has thrown away his leverage to end the conflict because no one now trusts him. samf.substack.com/p/ukraine-wi...

samf.substack.comUkraine: With or Without TrumpIt would be so much better if we could address the challenge of defending Ukraine against Russian aggression without also having to deal with Donald Trump and the psychodramas surrounding him.

Thinking about the practicalities - the four freedoms make sense as a package because the movement of goods and services are facilitated by movement of capital and labour. And countries have different endowments and comparative advantages, so there needs to be benefits for all.

Also FoM is a red line for the EU and I don't think the Euro or Schengen would be.

Not sure why Europe hasn't upped the pressure on Putin by saying that Russia's frozen assets will be used to fund Ukraine in stages until a ceasefire holds. Yes there are legal problems, but European security surely trumps them.

Liz Truss was always crackers (I worked with her for six months in 2012). But she wasn't completely delusional. It's quite sad really. A lot of Tory MPs who backed her knowing she wasn't remotely equipped should be deeply ashamed.

What particularly pissed me off about that column is the central claim isn't remotely true. Men are called bonkers, or some variant, all the time.
