"I sit here and get to do one of the coolest jobs in the world & play baseball for a living, and I do all that as type 1 diabetic. I hope to be an inspiration to kids that they can do anything they want to." #Padres pitcher Mason Miller on living with type one diabetes youtu.be/3Hg5Cu4s9FQ?...

This is Epic! 🚀 Axiom Mission 4 will research the accuracy of continuous glucose monitors #CGM and the viability of different insulins in space! With the end goal to "eventually fly a crew member with the condition". #T1D #diabetes issnationallab.org/press-releas...

Just beat Expedition 33. The music is awesome and the game is lots of fun! Never played a RPG like this, but it was totally worth it. #monami #ps5

A parent with #T1D gives the child a sub-5 % early-life risk, but a parent who carries a T1D genetic burden in the top 1% can push the child’s risk higher (even if that parent does not have #T1D!) So in some cases PGS > Family History of T1D (excluding if both parents have T1D) #Diabetes #Genomics

Effects of parental autoimmune diseases on type 1 diabetes in offspring can be partially explained by HLA and non-HLA polymorphisms www.cell.com/cell-genomic... @andganna.bsky.social

Just finished reading #Abundance by Ezra Klein and @dkthomp.bsky.social . Well worth it! The authors sum up the book well in the first chapter: "This book is dedicated to a simple idea: to have the future we want, we need to build and invent more of what we need." #booksky

Afreeza is a form of inhaled #insulin I use, in addition to normal insulin in my insulin pump. It’s super fast acting ( starts working in 30 minutes ) and i think it’s great. Today i decided to look up its full cost in cvs… 😅😅😅 #T1D #Diabetes

4 life changing technologies I use made possible by #NIH Research and the "Special Diabetes Program": - #Tandem Control IQ (Insulin delivery algorithm) - #Omnipod 5 (Insulin Pump) - #Dexcom G6 (Continuous Glucose Monitor) - Glucagon gvoke (Life saving low blood sugar treatment) #T1D

The "Special Diabetes Program" is a federal program that sends 160 million dollars to the #NIH to advance #T1D research. Each of the listed technologies was enabled with the Special Diabetes Program and I have used each one to make my Type 1 Diabetes management easier.

Oh wow, it’s been so long since I have “binged” a book! I picked up Project Hail Mary at the beginning of the week and I just finished it!So good, not a single dull moment! #booksky

This reflects my experience with a GLP-1 as a #T1D as well. Onboarding was rough, but it made my management a lot easier. #t1d #diabetes

Just learned this today, during a state of emergency pharmacists can use professional judgement to refill a perscription without a prescribers auth. Hopefully useful for people affected by the fires who lost access to medication. #T1D #diabetes #cafire

Very exciting development for immune evasive islet cells. These were transplanted, which are not readily available, but the hope is this could be extended into stem cell derived islets. www.breakthrought1d.org/news-and-upd... #t1d #diabetes #stemcells

Just finished Team Of Rivals! Such a good read! Goodwin does an amazing job showing Lincoln’s incredible emotional intelligence, truly something to admire. #booksky #lincoln

Really interesting video on how "glucose sensing" insulin works. Basically there is a synthetic lectin attached to the insulin molecule that will bind to glucose in the body, and when there is not enough, will bind to the insulin molecule itself. #T1D #Biology 🧬 🧪 www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVTS...

To be clear, the video labels this new insulin a “cure”, and insulin is not a cure for #T1D. It is just a treatment. None the less if you can look past the click bait title, it has some nifty animations on how this new type of insulin works.

10 percent of people with #T1D do not have the DR3/DR4 haplotype, this paper investigates the genetic drivers for T1D in this population, and suggests the mechanism may be based more on inflammation and b-cell disfunction, rather than T-cell activation. diabetesjournals.org/care/article... 🧬 💻

#SD2 is such an incredible resource in San Diego. Every person in this photo has spent a year mentoring a young person (HS or College) to support their journey in STEM. My mentee last year is now off at #Cal and I am so proud of him! sd2.org

Had to use this card at a comedy show that had a no phones policy recently! I need my phone to manage my insulin pump, luckily they were super accommodating and nice. They gave me a special wrist band and everything. #T1D #Diabetes #Loop

I have been experimenting with logging afreeza (inhalable insulin) in #loop (open source app that helps automate my insulin dosing through my insulin pump). As far as i’m aware, loop is the only lago that lets u log afreeza, and it seems to be working well 👍 #t1d #diabetes #closedloop

While only a proof of concept, Its interesting they use #gene editing for both the pluripotent stem cells and the CAR-Treg. #genomics #t1d

Created a gene edited pluripotent stem cell (beta cell precursor, which is what creates insulin) with a bait protein on its surface that can be recognized by something called a CAR-Treg. CAR-Treg (a type of Car-T cell) can suppress immune response. The result being beta cells that survive.
