Heading to #ICML2026 Seoul! I’ll be there from July 3–20 presenting my work on Protein/Biological LLMs. (And travelling + photographing, geeking out). I'd love to connect, share ideas, co-travel post-con or collaborate. DMs open! @icmlconf.bsky.social #ICML #AI #eleutherai #korea
#Autoresearch on #proteins - amazing what you can do with a gpu and a few nights on the SOTA for language models. (Now I just need more gpus) Viva @karpathy.bsky.social

SOTA LLM architecture ablations for a novel encoder paper proceeding apace: 1. hybrid architectures (Not the one you're thinking of): Jury is out, but I like it. 2. Local/global (#modernbert) style: less compute benefit than I expected, maybe my implementation sucks?

3. Exclusive self attention: costs speed, but learning seems better, worth it. 4. Alt masking rates: jury out.

Unreal Tournament 2004 is now available for free. ...well, I mean, you probably could've grabbed a GOG offline installer out the back of a truck earlier, but NOW it's Official/Legally Free and has the in-development community patch packed in for ongoing support. www.oldunreal.com/downloads/ut...

'Almost like science fiction': European ant is the first known animal to clone members of another species www.livescience.com/animals/ants... - Something fun for a change. This is some weird-ass-awesome biology!
1/ Our paper “Protein Language Models Expose Viral Immune Mimicry” is now published in Viruses! We show that protein Language Models can identify viral proteins, and those that fool our immune system. DOI: 10.3390/v17091199.

5/ Takeaway: PLM mistakes are signals—a practical way to flag candidate immune-evasive proteins for deeper study, with implications for vaccine design and antivirals. And we find that there aren't "adversarial examples" when it comes to proteins and the immune system (unlike NLP or vision)!
6/ This work appeared earlier as a poster at ICML 2024 (ML4LMS workshop). Thanks to that community for early feedback. openreview.net/forum?id=gGn... #ICML #icml2025

3/ Misclassifications are enriched for immune-evasive proteins (chronic/latent families like HIV) and low-immunogenic sequences—paralleling the real (biological) immune system's blind spots!
4/ Concrete examples flagged by the model: viral IL-10 homologs (EBV/CMV), TCR-β–like folds (gammaretrovirus), CD59 homologs (herpesviruses), and poxin–Schlafen proteins (monkeypox) that dampen the cGAS–STING pathway. These often look “human” to the model—and to immunity.

2/ We trained Protein LMs (ESM2;T5 and linear probes) to separate viral vs. human proteins. Results: ROC-AUC ≈99.7%. But the punchline isn’t the accuracy; it’s the errors (~3.9%)!

The person who says "oh I read Philosopher's Stone and it just didn't click" is probably telling the truth. The person who says "I KNEW JK ROWLING WAS SCUM THE MOMENT SHE CALLED VERNON FAT" absolutely wrote a Library of Alexandria's worth of Harry/Draco fanfiction.
