Next 24hrs - ACTIVE to STORM. A CME associated with a filament eruption observed on 14-Aug is expected to arrive today. Geomagnetic activity levels up to STORM G2 are possible.

Hello! 👋 We’re the Geomagnetism Team from the British Geological Survey. We’ll be posting a daily geomagnetic forecast here, along with occasional aurora alerts when we’re expecting a geomagnetic storm. We’ll also keep you updated on the team’s research and new developments.

The end of an era! The last broadcast of BBC Radio 4 on Longwave (198kHz). The transmitter will be switched off at the end of June after nearly a century of transmission from Droitwich.

Applications for our Geomagnetism Engineer close this Thursday 5th March. Sensors, Programming, Fieldwork, Geophysics !! This could be you 👇🧲🧲🌍🧲🧲👇

The fast (~1400 km/s) CME that launched yesterday is forecast to arrive sometime Tues. Probably during the day in the UK, so not great for aurora. But there's a fast solar wind stream near Earth, and the precise location/timing of that could really change the CME propagation.

Geologists at BGS have completed a major update to the geological map of the Yorkshire Wolds that will help to improve regional understanding of both the aquifer and the groundwater resources, and may assist in reducing risks to specific water supply assets. www.bgs.ac.uk/news/new-geo...

We have upgraded our geomagnetic forecast today (12 November 2025) to the highest intensity level amid an ongoing solar storm. Current predictions suggest that the activity will result in potentially the largest solar storm to hit our planet in over two decades.

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers. The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

Some Yorkshire geology for Yorkshire Day 💮

Scarborough is a favourite seaside destination for many reasons but for a rock lover, its geology is fascinating. Here, BGS' @meljleng.bsky.social takes us on a whistlestop tour of the local rocks, as well as some other fascinating sites in the area. www.bgs.ac.uk/discovering-...
