The soaring costs of public universities is a political decision. When these schools predominantly served white students, they tended to be free (UC, CCNY, etc.) But as the number of students of color has increased, funding for the public universities has decreased. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...

Jensen captures the joys of this palm-sized documentary, especially Mull's conscious direction of his talents to sustain a "painting career"; who else has managed to accomplish that, let alone all the other things he did so well?

you can call anything “trendy” in Calgary

Premier Danielle Smith will not be sharing the stage with Mark Carney or Jeromy Farkas at the big Calgary rally for Alberta to remain in Canada tonight. Instead, Smith will be across town tonight speaking at a $500-per ticket United Conservative Party fundraiser at the trendy Alvin’s Jazz Club.

Skeptical that this policy was motivated by equity. When I teach 1st-year, I always get students who are functionally illiterate, mostly Christian white kids who were homeschooled — some of this is regional, but national homeschooling rates have 2x since COVID, now representing 6% of all kids

Opinion: The University of Michigan paused a first-semester pass/fail pilot after national criticism and “distorted narratives,” its president said. In this opinion essay, a Michigan professor argues the retreat sets a troubling precedent for academic decision-making. https://chroni.cl/4il1282

After years of championing "free speech," Texas lawmakers have enabled a dramatic rise of censorship in Texas universities, banning concepts, canceling courses and closing departments seen as "woke," and even using AI bots as censors. All in the name of freedom. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

I spent a year watching school administrators do their jobs—and interviewing the students most impacted. I spoke to @thecut.com in a long-form Q&A about what I saw. Mainly, a system designed to protect perpetrators and punish victims in each and every case.

Always thinking about Tobi Haslett: "certain kinds of critics [...] are invested in displaying their exhaustion with politically inflected art. And I think: What are you exhausted with? Your closest experience to agitprop is Sesame Street. Your fatigue is so unearned, I can’t stand it."

rewatching the X-Files and obv Anderson and Duchovny have ridiculous chemistry but I’m now really enjoying just how much they’re on screen — the streaming version of a show like this would pad out the cast to make up for only getting them for two days per week

Impossible to understand how anyone could look at Rufo's career and conclude he was someone engaged in a "forthright defense of meritocracy." Rufo's entire career is built on the idea of purging people who don't think or look like him from positions of power.

This thread is inspired by a University of Utah alum who reached out after the New York Post wrote they had the highest reporting rate in the country. In Utah’s case, some crucial context is that there have been multiple high-profile murders of students in the past decade.

There are some news articles going around about sexual violence reporting rates at different universities. Let’s talk about why some schools have higher reporting rates than others:
