My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

One can draw a corollary from provincial Russians being so convinced of the virtue of Russkiy Mir: That it is either an improvement from Soviet times; or they are so thoroughly lied to about the rest of the world that they imagine monsters everywhere else.

Natalka@natalkakyiv.bsky.social

“The most interesting thing is that the toothless, provincial Russian masses are absolutely convinced that they’re wanted everywhere and that people dream of Russkiy Mir coming to their countries.” — Ukrainian political analyst Borys Tizengauzen explains Russkiy Mir in simple terms.

"If Ukraine were to surrender tomorrow then we would not be talking of peace but of the occupation of a European nation, and of the return of Soviet imperialism of the mid-20th century." Yes. I lived in that period, and I do not want to see it return.

Italian PM Giorgia Meloni says supporting Ukraine is “what makes peace possible,” arguing that an aggressor seeking its opponent’s capitulation has no reason to negotiate. She warned that if Ukraine stopped defending itself, the result would be occupation, not peace. #Ukraine

The US Embassy in Moscow has issued an advisory following reports of a potential pneumonic plague outbreak in Irkutsk. Americans were urged to monitor their health if they have visited the region.

Let's just pause to appreciate this for a moment: The USA is now threatening other NATO countries to secure a place as a fuel hegemon.

Amazing detail in this @wsj article about Kimberly Guilfoyle, US ambassador to Greece: she told a Greek minister, in a conversation about the collapse of the Romanian government,“We can do that to any country we want. We can do that here." www.wsj.com/articles/kim...

In an age where “free speech” is a culture war issue warped and won by how much US dark money a side has, I implore you to listen to literally anyone from Northern Ireland (or the west of Scotland) to understand what cultural “free speech” debates feel like marching in front of your actual house.

Jennifer Cobbe@jennifercobbe.bsky.social

No time for the Orange Order and I'd rather their marchers gave up and went home, but if the Northern Ireland political settlement can be thrown off course by a single march in Portadown then today's events are not the cause of that but simply the trigger for a collapse that was coming anyway

We don’t talk about Russ Vought enough and he’s the most powerful villain in Washington, D.C.

So, these new US Space Farce - sorry, Force - uniforms derive from designs in the movie Starship Troopers. Two questions: "Did the chucklehead who thought these up realize that fascism was being satirised in that movie?"; and, "How long until we see Indiana Jones punch someone wearing it?"

Someone appears to be gambling that taking away votes from one-third of Americans will not provoke a serious backlash.

ProPublica@propublica.org

NEW: Top USPS officials expressed concerns that new mail voting rules could delay or block ballots from reaching large swaths of eligible voters for the upcoming midterms, but the rules moved forward anyway, ProPublica has learned.

In early August, I contracted listeria, a bacterial infection from food poisoning. It hit me so hard that I ended up in the hospital for four days with severe dehydration and injured kidneys. I’m fine now but be extra careful with what you eat these days. It’s no joke.

The next time you think about reaching out and hesitate because you don't want to be a bother or you think you aren't important enough in that person's life? I want you to imagine they too have been thinking about you, and in their mind the growing silence is because you just don't care about them.

It's important that we take a moment to celebrate the passing of good people. That we take a moment to recite their good deeds and good memories. Not for the dead, though that alone is plenty, but for the living. That their passing may become a spark in the darkness to remind us Goodness exists.

I can highly recommend @hopenothate.org.uk ‘s report Race Science Inc. as a good starting place to understand how a eugenicist like Nathan Cofnas can get hired at two prestigious universities over more qualified candidates. This is a major far right project to give the academy’s legitimacy to them.

Mark Ruffalo has the biggest cojones and the biggest heart in Hollywood. Him being called antisemitic is a distraction from just how powerful and critical his post was.

EXCLUSIVE: The CMS, under Trump appointee Mehmet Oz, changed their guidance on voting in nursing homes last month. Now, a group of senators is saying that these changes are designed to disenfranchise America’s two million nursing home residents.

It certainly seems that someone wants to pander to the Trump clique.

PAPSS is going to be a very big deal. It's an African alternative to bank transfers through America and Europe: A route that often takes about 8% of the money (up to 20-30% in the worst cases!) in fees as it goes between banks, and is slow. PAPSS came to be because of Trump's tariffs, and it's a

good example of how he exacerbates the worst parts of our world: He's bad enough that the rest of the planet chooses the cost of innovation to get free. History shouldn't look kindly upon Donald Trump, but he might be thought of as the grit that makes oysters form pearls. And well done, Africa.

Trump's $4 billion Presidential windfall is unprecedented in scale & source. Obama's wealth grew from royalties from books written before office, and Bush's largely came from a sports‑team stake from over a decade prior. Trump's new billions are from deals made in office.

An unusual request in the name of archaeological science: Would anyone happen to have a Shetland or Exmoor pony that wouldn’t mind sending some fur samples to me? We’re trying to compare a potentially preserved fur specimen but there’s (perhaps unsurprisingly) few sources on fur fibre diameters!

Okay, this could be something of a game-changer. And just in time, too...
