My team and I study why pain can become chronic. We like the peripheral nervous system, neuroimmunology, stromal cells and sequencing. If you have similar interests - please say hi!

Our newest preprint is out! 🥳 Neuroscientists and rheumatologists - this one is for you! I'm also delighted that we seem to have finally found a single molecule apparently capable of inducing peripheral sensitization in cultured neurons - in the absence of any other supporting cells.

The SCORE investigation of repeatability and credibility is a lot. There are a few ways to get your head around it. 1: The Nature collection includes 3 papers from SCORE, an amazing paper from @i4replication.bsky.social and several commentaries about the work. www.nature.com/collections/... 1/

Prof Selina Wray will join us as our careers keynote, sharing her journey from a working class background and part time work through to a professorship, and Dr Carole Torsney, our research keynote, will tell us about her preclinical research on sex & gender disparities in pain.

Great to have this out: wonderful team effort, & nice to build on work from others that had identified the dysregulated osteoarthritis lipidome 😃 #neuroskyence #PainResearch

#New in #OAC ! The sphingolipid sphingomyelin 34:1 is upregulated in the synovial fluid of those with OA. Work from @phar.cam.ac.uk shows that SM34:1 causes inflammatory pain in mice, inducing neuronal hyperexcitability. @psalmotoxin.bsky.social @interlukein.bsky.social @mayadannawi.bsky.social

We've found a new gene linked to chronic pain in humans! The gene SLC45A4 encodes (the long-awaited) neuronal polyamine transporter, which is important for pain signalling in nerves. We hope this discovery might lead to new chronic pain treatments in the future! www.nature.com/articles/s41...
