If ever you wanted evidence of how white Hollywood is, check out these photos, and then imagine how they are folded to make the magazine cover - only the left third will be on the front

ANNIE LEIBOVITZ is one of the world’s most acclaimed photographers and has been capturing stunning gatefold covers for Vanity Fair’s annual Hollywood edition since 1995. These are some of her best… A THREAD 1/16

Watching a rock star doc tonight which genuinely sounds scripted by AI. Some great contributors but all this “the international pop icon disappeared from the public view and was rumoured to be a recluse… but went on to influence a brand new generation of global singer songwriters”

Fascinating piece by Drew Daniel this.

Back from the bunker with this piece freshly turned from the lathe, a survey of recordings of Aphex Twin, from pseudonyms and limted eds to SoundCloud dumps. Loved being inside this world

BBC News leads, rightly, with the drought. The tone is serious, the content detailed. But no mention of man-made climate change let alone climate emergency (have to wait for explainer afterwards). No mention of 20% of clean water supply lost by disastrous privatised companies.

Enjoyed watching this for The Wire, some thoughts on the distinctive experience of listening events like Polygon Portal and Pitchblack Playback, what makes them tick, and how they could keep them fresh

Collective listening events respond to a cultural need, but are at risk of co-option by wellness and lifestyle marketeers, argues Derek Walmsley in The Wire 511 Read the full essay here: www.thewire.co.uk/in-writing/c...

At present Wordcounter seems to suffer from an approximately 13 second delay from when you paste your text in to when it finally gives you the total, which should be, like, banned by the Geneva Convention or something

I also found this absolutely shocking. The theory that the Earth is flat is becoming a growing fault line in online bantz. But….

Alan Lester@alanlester.bsky.social

The BBC 10 o’clock news says the right wing idea of ethnic minorities being given preferential treatment in criminal justice is likely to become a “growing fault line in our politics” WITHOUT POINTING OUT THAT IT IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE. What’s the point of the news if it doesn’t correct disinformation?

Come for the music intel, stay for the A-class pun action

It's being reported that Julio Le Parc has died. I met Le Parc in Paris (for this @friezeofficial.bsky.social feature www.frieze.com/article/peri...) nearly thirteen years ago and liked him a lot. There was something impish and irrepressible about him even then, at 84 years old.

Some very cool stuff in the brand new Wire, including a great window onto the weirdo music scene over on Vancouver Island in Emily Pothast’s EarthBall feature, and I reviewed this and that including an amazing effectively new Margareth Kammerer album

So sad to her about this loss of the very great, and very generous, Steve Barrow. When The Congos played in London last year, he was the only person they gave a shout out to from the stage. Imagine just how great a reissue label must be to be that guy who gets a namecheck from the band.

Little shoutout to Tony Rettman’s avant rock column. Tony writes about a hoard of scuzzy, scummy and generally kick ass rock, most of which I don’t know, which is always worth its weight in gold
