This Thursday 29th October: Modern design - Can we leverage design systems to avoid the chaos that can often be associated with #AI use? Can people escape from their 'box'? Courtney has answers and we're sure there will be some open questions too from any #WebDesign #FrontEnd and #Figma fans.

Remember cancelled Courtney's modern #AI #WebDesign workflows talk due to ridiculous levels of summer? Well we're back on Thursday the 29th October now that things have decided to calm it down ☀️ Tickets available for her rescheduled talk in the Owen Building, SHU: www.meetup.com/front-end-sh...

Sad to see this from the Corporation. I know the press enjoys making entertainment out of difficult issues, but he's a sex offender. He hurt people. Either that's fun or it isn't. I fall on the side of isn't. BBC Sounds shouldn't promo coverage so distastefully.

#SNLUK is a surprise weekly highlight. The odd naff sketch, but also always genuine high points - most consistently Ania Magliano & Paddy Young on 'Weekend Update', which is worthy of the Norm Macdonald-associated heritage. Plus, they always address the issues that matter #bumstuff #PHP

> "AI does not understand accountability, trust, culture, unwritten rules, ethical trade-offs or fairness, all of which shape reputational risk and ultimately drive revenue growth…" Figures. These are things the tech industry couldn't care less about. www.apollo.com/wealth/insig...

#BBCLauraK has been dogmatic and fearless through questioning which feels singularly-focused on #FreedomOfMovement. It's great that those people who are similarly-obsessed - and who likely don't realise that Pakistan and Somalia are not part of Europe - finally have a voice. Again.

Unusual choice - to wait until the fella is well out of the picture before burning his gaff down, especially considering what he got up to. But in fairness, what do I know about real estate?

Great body language on #BBCLauraK is brilliant as Mad Nads speaks her brains. Jo Coburn & Dale Vince have opposing views on zionism but unite in not allowing a win for a spokesperson from the "I'd bathe her if she was my daughter" party, no matter how much high rising terminal she deploys #BBCLauraK

Working on a design for a website and finally realising the font family I had picked doesn't offer enough weights & styles. I hope you enjoy my #WebDesign meme x

Q: You said Russia and Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire, but both sides said they have not agreed to that TRUMP: Well they agreed, you know why? Because I said 'you agree.' That's why.

Even Wes Streeting - who can be a little, err, slippery at times - suggests that US mid-terms may explain the Trump/Putin diesel deal. Great to have Derbyshire on #BBCLauraK today, and with an FT ed cutting through the BS it's like a grown-up version of the show.

First question from Laura to the most important politician in Scotland: "You said a mean thing about Andy B, and then they totes clapped back with a sick burn. Real talk right now: did you feel like that queen totally slayed you, hun?" #BBCLauraK

Classic Daily Mail imho: They've picked a picture of him looking like a fierce thug, rather than a shot where he's with his family and kids. Also fat-shaming 🐅

This morning I saw a man in a van shout at a bunch of 6 year olds to "HURRY UP THEN" on a zebra crossing and later watched a video of Pete Hegseth 🍹 announcing #ProjectMeridian I think that's all the Small Dick Energy™ I need for today, unless anyone has any more?

"Why are people having to pay the price for successive governments failures" is something #BBCLauraK asked the Prime Minister. This is very funny (and obviously terribly sad) to anyone who doesn't think politics is just sport / grey drama.

🎶 "She still wears that Star Wars Dress, my Eurodisney vampiress" The new Arab Strap is just about as good as you'd expect it to be, tbh. The usual dose of uplifting misery - but surprisingly danceable to.

Confused by headlines about Daniel Thomas "Slashing a dingy". Burying the lede somewhat, when video shows him slashing a dingy *with a lifeboat man on it". Watercraft welfare not terribly high on most people's list of concerns. Threatening to drown emergency workers perhaps more so.

I've recently gone from being primarily a cyclist to a pedestrian. As the summer ends, Ecclesall Rd, #Sheffield has got _super-fun_. Someone almost hit me this morning. They saw me in the road. They slowed… then *accelerated*. I was on a zebra crossing. Outside a primary school. Cool, cool.

As a cyclist I thought I'd die under the wheels of a Landrover or Qashqai. As is written. But I think now it's the smaller cars: 500s, Minis, etc. A wipe-clean "starting uni" present, darting into a side street impervious to the Northern plebeian crossing… just another statistic waiting to happen.

More this evening: One man stopped and then made his displeasure known at his failure to score a clean kill. The next, a woman who kept her eyes locked forward, pretending not to see the gangly 6ft mess she'd refused to stop for which then caught up with her immediately. These are the two genders.

This Thursday, Richard Oliver Bray will share which tooling & techniques he utilises to ensure that #AI tooling like Claude Code is working for him. Richard is well versed in making tricky topics accessible. 1 talk of 2 on the 24th September at SHU, Owen Building. 🎟️ www.meetup.com/front-end-sh...

Missed #BBCLauraK this morning, but it sounds like I can pick up most of it from the pages of Hello magazine on the rail commute. I guess they figured the viewers of their politics programme wouldn't care too much about conference season ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Someone in B&Q DIY stopped me and asked if I work there. I've got to start dressing better. [ Alternative post: I've never dressed so well as I do now. ]

"If I said to you 'have better songs', would that be a reasonable approach to why we haven't won #Eurovision?" Charlie Stayt remains a top 5 broadcaster ♥️ #BBCBreakfast

We're re-opening the Web Components Vs frameworks battle at our 24th September event. Hayleigh Thompson will make the case that with just a little shift on what we think a 'component' is, the rewards of interoperability are worth fighting for. 🎟️ www.meetup.com/front-end-sh... #WebComponents

"[Reforms] popularity has scared Labour and the Tories, but that success has come with more scrutiny" This is the intro to a story on how Reform UK got headlines into the press with zero scrutiny. whut. #BBCLauraK #ukpol

Love me a pint of Timmy Taylors Dark. I don't understand why they had to turn the Daddy Dial™ all the way up to 11. People in marketing reckoning they know why Gen Z do the things they do. Crap rebrand. #UKBeer

We hope you didn't turn up tonight… sorry if you did. We typically take a break over the summer to work on our suntans†, but we'll be back in September with a Web Component and agent bullying festival of FE. (†this may not be entirely true)

Our September 24th meetup will welcome Hayleigh Thompson from Shopify who may well try to bury the #WebComponents Vs frameworks argument! Also, Richard Oliver Bray returns to talk about an agent-friendly dev experience that works for him (and for Claude Code) #AI 🎟️ www.meetup.com/front-end-sh...

Anytime I hear Dolly mentioned I recall how she put a bunch of kids books into Doncaster, Yorkshire schools and I think that's pretty cool.

Me: Sweet. 30 Bluesky notifications, finally I'm getting some traction. Bluesky app: Tricked you! No one wants to talk to you. I am generally pretty crap at everything expected of me.

I have a family member who only sends me 'Moonpig dot com' cards and this is absolutely the next depressing level downwards.

The #BBC needs to update it's language guidelines: > …Oman, which is a US ally… No. It was "historically" a US ally. Just like Denmark was historically a US ally. The US has no real alliances now. If you threaten to bomb/invade an 'ally' they are not an ally. Hopefully in the future, but not now.
