AAUP TV and The American Vandal Podcast will help conversations like Thursday’s reach wider audiences. In addition to AI, talks from Public Budgets, Public Good at Wayne State focused on how higher ed is being affected by private equity, institutional debt, and ed tech. Top notch work!

Higher Ed folks, mark your calendars cuz this is happening! Gonna be broadcast on AAUP TV so we can reach a national audience! Please spread the word to help us reclaim higher education for the public good!

English Studies colleagues, I’m gathering examples of position statements on AI, as I’m working with a colleague on a draft for our department. The one from Rutgers rocks, and I’m wondering if any of y’all could share yours? The process is trickier than I had imagined !🙏✊

Thanks for sharing and amplifying our story, Matt. Many of us at GV have been preparing for this—listening to the ensemble of critical voices you’ve gathered in your excellent podcast, The American Vandal, has been indispensable, empowering, and inspiring. ✊🙏

This book is a godsend for academic workers! Read it, share it with folks who care about the fate of democracy and the planet, teach it, talk it up within organizing, union, and faculty governance spaces. It's gonna be indispensable to the struggle to build a political economy that works for all.

Methinks the late Fredric Jameson would have deep and penetrating insight into the fact that a US president-elect/greedhead/bullyboy/con-man/real estate mogul just brokered a ceasefire in Gaza: "I will put a very simple proposition to you: namely that today, all politics is about real estate."

"These developments expose without a shadow of a doubt that the Biden administration’s failure to achieve a ceasefire was always wilful, and that the Democratic Party government positively chose to arm and support the genocide. There will have to be accountability for that."

Matt has answers to the ongoing and accelerating climate catastrophe—build and harness the power of a transnational labor movement. Wanna do something about the wildfires in California? Or the genocide in Gaza? Support and build unions that are excited and ready to FIGHT to defend the planet!

Warm thanks to colleagues in the MLA for their principled stance on the genocide in Gaza. Anti-BDS legislation is fascistic and continuous with the barbarous logics of coloniality since 1492. To capitulate to the idol of neoliberal economic rationality at this historical moment is MADNESS!

Events like the California fires demonstrate why it's so dangerous when tech billionaires decide to eschew rigorous fact-checking. Social media remains a vital source of real-time life-saving information during crises and disasters. Having accurate information is often a matter of life or death.

Holy smokin' mother of SIN! "BILLIONS AND BILLIONS SERVED"—indeed ... and legions upon legions of wild-ass chickens comin' home to roost! So this is 2025—buckle up, folks ... and UNIONIZE, UNIONIZE, UNIONIZE!

Gearing up to write an abstract for an essay on indebted life and the ways that higher education is entangled with neoliberal, extractivist, racial capitalist political economies. Gotta recognize the ways that listening to @mattseybold.bsky.social's podcast has made this work possible.

The collective knowledge produced by this podcast has been a boon to teachers like myself whose time is being stolen away on the regular by said political economy. Listening to this podcast has helped me to steal time back and imagine ways to reclaim the commons in our classroom praxis.

One last thing. If you're keenly interested in critical university studies, but don't always have time to read the latest, AV is a lively, inspiring, and accessible digest of CUS concepts, themes, and concerns.

As we prepare ourselves for the struggles ahead, many people are feeling discouraged or confused about how to move forward. Organizers Kelly Hayes, Mariame Kaba, Shane Burley, Dean Spade and Eman Abdelhadi discuss how we should be showing up for each other in these times.

"Confronting the state will require a mass base of people, and the strategic value of preventing solidarity between the people who could make up that base is no more mysterious than the question of whether the average army would prefer to face a larger or smaller enemy army."

"Unions are engines of democratic life that invite and allow for sustained participation. Union participation puts workers in common cause with one another, which offers a reason to rethink the social relationships between workers and owners."

"One sense of solidarity is in the direction we want, that of solidifying popular power against oppression and working to expand the zone of people whose material lives, rights and dignity are respected."

Intrigued, pissed, and a touch terrified by the AI advertising blitz happenin' on ESPN and elsewhere during college bowl season. Same shit goin' down while watchin' the Lions last night🤔😱

Jimmy Carter was the one ex-president in the modern era to openly admit (and lament) the truth about what America has become in the post-Citizens United era. The national press corps probably won’t mention this, but it was really something. He was a real one. RIP.

Had a thimbleful of hope that perhaps the Biden administration might cancel the debt of aging borrowers. Reading this article just killed it. Takes me back to the moment when Biden and the Dems blocked Bernie—and an entire movement that joyfully embraced and defended the dignity of ordinary people.
