San Diego w/ top quality of life & LA at the bottom is sending me through the ceiling lmao

Ben Raderstorf@raders.bsky.social

Sacramento is, by these metrics, the best value and some of the highest quality of life anywhere in the west. California incomes and sunshine with Portland’s prices and Denver’s access to nature is I guess a ranking-friendly combo?

Doing "single-stair reform" that requires a second stairway on the outside of the building might be the most San Francisco thing I've ever seen

Lawyer-Latin is bad & more lawyers should be publicly shamed for this; pick classical or ecclesiastical & miss me with ‘idiot Southerner couldn’t read & now that’s just how we say it’ mess

My father always talks about how great it was taking the bus w/ zero traffic from Irvine to LA to see all sorts of sports, from fencing to volleyball

After the 1984 Olympics, Angelenos with fond memories of moving around Southern California for those two weeks kept questioning why the temporary fixes put in place during the Olympics couldn't be implemented all the time. Here's the LA Times in 1989: www.latimes.com/archives/la-...

Astrology is silly but it did give us Constance Collier in this clip so probably worth it overall youtu.be/IHYJSJuoO48

this is fascinating and sort of tracks with what I expected here - basically, if you believe in astrology (or at least pay regular attention to horoscopes), it seems like you start to mold your personality to those horoscopes if you don’t, there’s no correlation

Mayor Bass is pushing the state legislature to put into *state law* that cities with over 2 million people (only LA) cannot reduce the # of car lanes of a road that leads into a cemetery without mayoral approval. Just to kill this desperately needed bike lane project.

"Her platform focuses on technocratic solutions like the theoretically best possible zoning policies rather than building power for the working-class by challenging capital." Good thing LA's zoning status quo is not devastating the city's working class or anything.

A reply to 'First New York, Now Los Angeles': DSA-LA members opposed to endorsing Nithya Raman argue she hasn't earned the chapter's approval. READ: geesemag.com/article...

If you want to know why it feels like there is no direction or vision in LA, this is why. The LA establishment is stuck 50 years in the past, serving people like the Sherman Oaks HOA who want all the opportunity of being a global city while pretending their neighborhood is a village.

Kierkegaarden Cop@joshsteich.bsky.social

Bass hates taco trucks because she’s running for the mayor of 1984 Los Angeles; Raman is running for mayor of 2026. And the Sherman Oaks HOA believes in an American dream of suburbs without a city, and Bass is willing to pretend that’s sustainable.

I'm listening to Nithya Raman at the #CAInfillSummit in LA and she appears to know enough about the building plan check process in LA to know it doesn't work. This is something rare in a politician.

This is also true in building code reforms. Getting your city/state to allow 6-story single-stair bldgs is great on paper. But if its only possible with a 50%+ larger pressurized stairwell that likely no one will build, at that point are you really allowing single-stair buildings?

Great piece on the lackluster effects of California’s new housing laws. Legislators have finally challenged anti-density NIMBYism, but by loading on inclusionary zoning and wage requirements, they’ve made newly legal housing too costly to build www.theatlantic.com/economy/2026...

Sorry to all the people I’ve been grousing to about this for fifteen years but -

The more I've learned about how US building codes work, the more scandalized I've become. It almost makes zoning look good! Our codes, which are owned by a private entity, are updated constantly, with almost no research or cost-benefit analysis... www.housingwire.com/articles/mod...
