In other words: this should be a legal place to put a modern electric elevator

Stephen Jacob Smith@stephenjacobsmith.com

On Tue., Nov. 3, at 4 p.m. ET, I'm presenting my IBC proposal to a committee work group (one of many) to allow elevators to open into exits if dwelling units are also allowed to open directly into them. Essentially it would remove the "corridor penalty" for adding an elevator to a single-stair...

The scale of the park is impressive. So many sports fields. Miles of cycling without traffic lights or traffic. Zoom in and it’s even called a Floodway Park.

I haven’t been to this one, but the Tamsui river parks dividing Taipei and New Taipei city is outside the flood walls/gates. Amazing bike paths and bird watching on dry days

Yes, Taiwan plans for huge monsoon and typhoon flows. All of these linear parks are flood plains. We should copy this

There is an international, well-connected network of fascists promoting far-right candidates in elections (and coups) across the world. The guy who owns the site Yglesias posted this on is one of their leaders. Be careful of people advocating for their opponents to disarm!

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

Another data point for the “Yglesias brain is cooked” hypothesis. Imagine thinking that it doesn’t matter for American democracy if other countries are taken over by autocratic regimes. We just saw the result when Orban lost power and a bunch of conservative influencers had their income vaporized.

The easily predictable result is that by framing development as a negative thing from which concessions must be extracted, you eventually get people who think there should be no development at all no matter what.

I have, in different capacities, both volunteering and professional, spoken to hundreds of planners across the state of California about these issues. These views are not unique! There is something deeply wrong with how planning is taught at American universities and practices in planning depts.

I have YIMBY planner friends who swear up and down that these views are anything but hegemonic in planning but they’re not. The planning profession by-and-large believes the San Francisco model works. It’s near a consensus position.

Bernie Sanders' ability to endorse the most dead end NIMBYs remains unparalleled. Jane Kim used to work for his 2020 campaign; now he's endorsing her for a job that she doesn't even understand. It pains me to urge people to vote for NIMBY Ben Allen, but he actually understands insurance markets.

heatmap.newsThe Surprisingly Exciting Race to Be California’s Next Insurance CommissionerBen Allen wants to reform the existing market. Jane Kim wants a revolution.

The LA River could probably pull this off between Sepulveda Basin and Elysian Valley but any LA River plan has to contend with the fact that the natural state of the river in summer is dry and winter is subject to occasional huge flows.

WELKER: Is a vote for you a vote for the Trump agenda? MIKE ROGERS: Um, I'm apologizing. I'm having some difficultly in my earpiece. But is a vote for you? I'm not sure. I'll tell you what a vote for me is. It's a great day for the state of Michigan

Liberal democracy remains a towering achievement of humanity and it is worth fighting for.

There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere* Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines As a species we decided, “we will survive” Let’s do that some more

We’ve allowed Trump et al to normalize this kind of cruelty and misogyny in politics. But now it must stop. This man must be pilloried and trounced on Election Day. Or these animals won’t stop. I still believe the people of Ohio will reject this cartoon villain.

I think if you’re worried about “rule of law” you can just say that it’s obvious that the president can’t pardon someone for a crime they haven’t even been convicted of, for reasons that are abundantly apparent in the Trump 2 Era. And if John Roberts doesn’t like it he can argue with 4 new justices.

Stan Oklobdzija@stano.bsky.social

Trump is inevitably going to pardon Kushner on his way out the door and we are a nation of suckers if we twist ourselves in knots about whether it would hurt the rule of law if we just declared "Trump pardons are fake" and ignored them.

“The president can tell his goons to do crimes and then preemptively pardon them from anything and everything on his last day in office” would have been an easily identifiable opportunity for abuse of power that the authors of the Constitution would have wanted to avoid.

Also — Nithya Raman could immediately dismiss the current LA mayoral appointees to the Metro board, like, say, Imelda Padilla, who has no real interest or expertise in transit, and replace these board seats with people who actually ride transit
