The Starbucks app and its order to table functionality has allowed me to try a lot more of their drinks whose names I was too embarrassed to speak out loud. Unfortunately they're all bad and not worth it

Rochko, the mastodon founder, has "Likes all things analog. Luddite" in his profile and posts selfies dressed like it's 1840. It's best thought of as a historical reenactment community. No hate, it's charming in a way

The poll so far between Twitter, Bluesky and Mastodon. I think it looks less absurd than last time, but still pretty clear that the base is divided. bsky.app/profile/mits...

Woke up at 4am today considering the idea of just building an altar for my inner demons and then make offerings, like flowers. The idea alone already makes me feel better, I might actually do this

(speculative:) maralago face can be explained by the fact that signaling one's availability is the important part, not achieving any kind of "objective" attractiveness

Had not noticed this so clearly before: if you search online for a painting the colors may be completely off.

Chatgpt told me to read Hesse's Steppenwolf. The protagonist so far seems extremely pathetic, I am kinda scared that I'll find out that Hesse thinks we should feel sympathy for a 50y old guy who thinks he's NOT like everyone else and fantasizes about blowing things up or seducing underage girls

One Italian language learning YouTuber I semi follow lost his mind over the French protest, full paranoid episode, "trump is absolutely right", remigration race war mouth foaming. Just a data point but this is kinda the main effect I expect

"humans tend to anthropomorphize things" because they should, we are similar to a lot of things

This is a tentative argument. What I actually believe is that humans believe that even most dna-verifiable humans are just non player characters, p-zombies, sheeple, subhuman, pick one

no, no, I said i'm a DUELIST. your insipid theory of consciousness offends my honor and I demand satisfaction

Thinking of it, people have *wildly* varying opinions on the inner life of animals. I had a biology teacher who told us that animals have no individuality; having grown up around animals this seemed incredibly wrong

“clicking around on websites that have existed for 8 years is a natural part of the human experience“ is one of the worst arguments against using AI I have ever heard, and that’s saying something. 99+% of the humans who ever lived have never done anything like it www.hottakes.space/p/a-slow-ced...

As a former resident of Amsterdam I've always kinda ignored van Gogh, like I'd ignore Monet or similar mass culture phenomena. But listening to his letters this was a mistake. He was really an interesting guy, deeply committed and serious/stubborn in an appealing way

Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem is going to sound different when you can instantiate a thousand conscious beings with an API call

I log into Amazon using passkey and they send me a verification code by email. Guess that improves security for the .1% of cases where my phone is compromised but not my email?

I think I finally understand this affection-bordering-on-aggression thing cats do with other cats. It's the same as humor in humans: finding out how far you can go, with plausible deniability. A relative status negotiation/exploration, identifying were the red line is

which I don't, I should be getting model text streamed to my eyes, rather than humano slopthought. and as today, so tomorrow and forever. interesting. "the death of stack overflow but for random peoples opinions"

Van Gogh had this perspective frame custom made by a carpenter at a time he had no money at all. Described in a letter to Theo. I gave that letter to Sol and got an implementation that works on the phone

One of my favorite Buddha quotes - not that I'm great at following it, but it is sometimes helpful to look at it and realize that maybe my mind is concerning itself with pretty irrelevant things

In awe of bsky’s ability to remain interested in talking to / about AI denialists. Have some backlit miscanthus instead? While they also have little impact on policy, they are capable of altering position slightly in response to events and thus could—in principle—surprise us.

With Bangkok's motorcycle courier culture, you get a good preview of how it feels to have agents for random tasks in the physical world. Like I go to the park to run, change there afterwards, send running clothes and shoes home by courier.

I mange a few recently graduated software engineers. They learn because as things change they want to know how it all works. Using AI has not diminished how much they learn how things work

Started listening to van Gogh's letters to his brother. Paraphrasing, so far it's all "omg I'm such a fuckup but from now on I will grind very hard and maybe one day I'll be able to become a preacher in a small church in the countryside"

Floods nonwithstanding, I remain a fan of rainy season Bangkok. Ideal background for my mode of being

(tentatively,) I think there just isn't some variant of masculinity that does not get you into trouble somehow, and I'm including its rejection as one variant. So you pick one or it picks you and that determines the specific flavour of the trouble

Kinda interesting to have AI try to improve a sketch of mine. To my eyes while it has some ideas of what could be better (darks), it fails to hit the right stylization/detail balance

It is fascinating that LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, bsky, insta, Reddit are each dumb in their own very specific way

Anyway thanks for the injunction to enjoy (Lacan), I've been out kayaking early and superego and me are at peace temporarily

My current travel algorithm: take the train to a random provincial stop, stay at the 25 euro/night hotel, visit whatever looks interesting on Google maps

At this point I can babble in bad Thai for half an hour if the other person is patient and willing to decode my circumlocutions. But day to day "simple" interactions are still killing me, the follow up questions in particular. Want the medium? Normal amount of sugar? Do you have a membership card

I was feeling frustrated about this the other day, but then I remembered that I had been working in English for years when I went to the US for the first time and had the same problem. Maybe this area deserves a dedicated approach

The safe future is one where a few corporations run everything for us. That has made everybody happy and safe.

I've experienced it often enough now to say with certainty that I get EV-carsick. Something about the different acceleration patterns. I'm pro EV, it might be a matter of getting used to it, it may be drivers having to get used to it - but whatever it is, I get carsick in EVs

The thing with not knowing a language well is that it forces you into using hands and feet to communicate, making you more expressive but more clownish, a lively caricature, and even the words you know only allow low dimensional thoughts. -- Not my favorite place to be, but

This is a true thing that people who have not worked with banks never believe you when you explain it
