Plans global networks, lives in a world of pure approximation, juggles metaphorical chainsaws for theoretical fun and actual profit. Not the comic book writer. He’s here too, though. He/him

like I suspect many of you on This Website, I think a core reason why I find Eliezer Yudkowsky and his rationalist and effective altruist satellites so intensely annoying is because I had a VERY similar “being a super weird, pretentious, hyper-literate kid” experience - I just, you know, grew up.

About a month after 9/11, I remember driving to Long Island. The *second* I crossed over from Queens into Nassau, the hyper-patriotic “we’re gonna kick their asses whoever they are” flag-wavey stuff started.
You know another thing that sucked in the months after 9/11? Folks in matching t-shirts flying into NYC, wandering around trying to hug randoms, and explaining that while they thought we were all going to hell they were here to shop to save America and we were Americans too! That shit was not cute

It’s the late nineties. I had just moved to Cambridge from NYC. The first morning I wake up as a MA resident I see some guy slowly driving by with a megaphone mounted to his roof saying “TODAY IS STREET CLEANIN’. MOVE YAH CAH AW IT’LL BE TOWED.”
Ah to live in Cambridge is to be awakened in a panic when an announcement-making truck going by reminds you it is Street Cleaning and you have parked on the wrong side of the street. I see most of my neighbors forgot, too…😅

This is a great example of someone using Masshole in the best possible way. “Is that a question?” “Yeah, kinda, like… are we being pricks? Are we trying to do nothin’? Cause it seems like we’re doin’ nothin’.”
On its third attempt tonight, Marblehead Town Meeting approved an “MBTA Communities–compliant” district largely centered on the 125-year-old Tedesco Country Club, meeting 3A requirements on paper while all but assuring no new housing would be built. This comment says it all.
