I don't recall ever going trick-or-treating when I was a kid (in the UK in the 1970s/80s). Getting dressed up and going door-to-door was more of an American thing, right? Or is this just me? #Halloween

I just watched a little. It careens between dead-eyed emptiness and the bad continuity of a histrionic, no-budget, 1970s daytime soap opera. Like mistaking a photo of a dish in a menu for the actual meal itself. www.wired.com/story/grok-s...

Sausagemeat is smarter than this motherfucker. The relentless idiocy of this regime is *exhausting*. It's unbearable.

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

#NowPlaying In the days before home video, I used to record episodes of #StarTrek onto audio cassettes with my portable tape player's in-built mic. The on-screen action was frequently punctuated by me shushing noisy family members and my miaowing/purring cat.

it’s amazing how these billionaire tech freaks *love* mainstream sci-fi and superhero movies, and also manage to completely miss the incredibly unsubtle and heavy-handed “we need to protect human creativity and freedom” moral that essentially all those movies are imbued with

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

#NowPlaying Duke Ellington: The Complete 1936-1940 Small Group Recordings. I have such a soft spot for small group recordings of the 1930s, possibly because I was brought up on Laurel & Hardy/Hal Roach shorts, most of which featured Leroy Shield's music for small groups.

I annoy the hell out of myself. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool skeptic/rationalist in my 50s, but I only have to watch one documentary about the supernatural, and at 4am the following morning, I delay going to the bathroom for as long as I can because of all the dark entities that are surely lying in wait.

Swiss Family Robinson, 1976 re-release, Altrincham Hippodrome (or maybe Sale Odeon). I have only one recollection: coconuts being used as grenades. I was 5 years old. I haven't seen it since, so I've no idea if my memory has any basis in fact.

First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

Browsing #Netflix. Do they realise films were made before 1973? At least old-school video rental shops offered classics going back to the silent era, as well as healthy art, avant-garde, and world cinema sections. I discovered so much that way. There's a narrowing, rather than widening, of culture.

I read a novel recently that was lauded as groundbreakingly quirky and off-beat. And I thought, yes, but only if you haven't read the many notable, more quirky, more off-beat novels that preceded it. People keep reinventing the wheel, each time hailing it as this incredible new invention.

Still flat on my back with a stinking cold and brain fog (a real pea-souper) that's set back my cognitive abilities about 100 years. I can just about cope with the late 1920s, early 30s at a push. #NowPlaying Duke Ellington, Jean Goldkette, Earl Hines, Leroy Shield, and reading Toni Morrison's Jazz.

What's that you say? A UK study aimed at proving that ADHD and autism are over-diagnosed actually found that we are still under-diagnosing both, and lack access to assessments remains a huge barrier to support? What a shocking and unexpected conclusion! www.politicsuk.com/p/fonagy-rev...

If you build a contraption that hurts your neighbour, you are liable. But if you build an AI software that allows attackers to down a good part of western government services along with university services etc., you become a billionaire and are not liable for anything? Surely that cannot be right.

Nowadays, the internet sometimes feels like a once well-to-do neighbourhood that became a slum after an industrial park & motorway were built through it. And I'm the lifelong resident who refuses to leave, unable to accept that the decaying, now unsafe area will never regain its former grandeur.

It's like a Victorian boom-town in decline whose main industry is long gone. The grand architecture, built with utopian hopes, lies abandoned amid crime-ridden highrises. It's no longer a safe place to be; you're forever looking over your shoulder; and no number of locks will keep your door secure.

"From now on we will only play music featuring instruments invented in the UK. The Great British Penny Whistle Revue is on at 9pm, followed by a recital of penny whistle music; Penny Whistle Gala is on at 4pm, and at 6pm there's another episode of our weekly music quiz, Spend A Penny Whistle..."

The problem with calling it #NoKings: It will appeal to Trump's benighted narcissism. "Many many people call me a king; probably the most people ever. Even my enemies say I'm king. No president in history before me has been respected this muchly. I may change 'President' to 'Super-Intelligent King'"

Catalogue cover for the world-changing 1936 expo Cubism and Abstract Art at New York City's Museum of Modern Art, by Alfred H. Barr Jr., the museum's first director (dismissed in 1943 by its board, who decided he'd gone too far with his Morris Hirshfield show) www.moma.org/momaorg/shar...

I only just found out that James Acaster is autistic. If that seems like an obvious oversight on my part, it's probably because, well, you know.

I'm becoming very invested in the prospect of the autistic man who hates lying somehow managing to win The Traitors as a traitor. Just really want it to happen #CelebrityTraitors

Seeing #Autechre live is a unique experience. Seeing Autechre live at Bataclan in pitch darkness even more so. It's like sharing the inside of your head with 1600 people. Incredible & memorable.

Train #1: A cut & paste office guy on his phone, scooping out his nostrils every 2 mins then wiping his fingers on the wall, seat, his own pants, or rolling it into a ball and flicking it away. Train #2: A woman with a bug unabashedly coughing/sneezing in a packed carriage. Humans. Do we need them?

I was just searching for lists of 5-letter nouns. Of course, Google AI pushed its way to the top of the results to offer, among others, 'allow', 'drench', 'script', and 'flight'. Thanks HAL, you're an indispensable, stone-cold brain trauma.
