Genuinely I don't know that it comes across to people who haven't been here to watch how almost unbelievable this was, just people taking something that looked impossible and dragging it kicking and screaming all the way to inevitability.

These gloves are following the same pattern of school resource officers themselves and other methods of school defense---put into schools in the hopes they will "protect the students" and end up being folded into the repertoire of disciplinary tactics.

Andy Carvin@acarv.in

Bellevue Police Capt John Stuck: “We get kids that once that school resource officer has put the gloves on, or they see that the gloves are on, they immediately comply without even touching them or doing anything. Which again, that’s a complete success for us.” Hmm, where have I heard this before?

AI has exposed the austerity con game in higher ed. For years, we have been told there is no money for students, faculty, staff, capital improvements, libraries. But somehow universities have suddenly come up with the money to pay for AI services??

If I may get on my soap box: No Kings is a tactic. It is not the strategy and no one involved in putting it on considers it sufficient on its own. It's a mass show of defiance that's also served as an onramp to the kind of local organizing work that's necessary to shift power

Amanda Becker@amandabecker.bsky.social

I see on-the-ground evidence *on a daily basis* of how people's involvement in No Kings, Indivisible, 50501 has grown into ICE monitoring, flock camera protests, city council blowups over data centers and running for office. THAT was the point of No Kings, all along, from my perspective.

Important new piece from @jeenashahesq.bsky.social in City & State. The protests against Israeli real estate events are responding to “active facilitation of what international courts and human rights bodies have classified as criminality representing the worst threats to humanity.”

Today, @jeenashahesq.bsky.social argues that Trump’s contradictory treatment of Hernández and Maduro reveals the consistency of U.S. foreign policy: the War on Drugs serves as a flexible tool for maintaining global capitalism’s necessary periphery.

In my latest piece out today on @lpeblog.bsky.social, I reconcile Trump's pardoning of a former Honduran President on drug trafficking while abducting Maduro on similar charges by showing how both actions are consistent with the logic underlying the U.S.'s War on Drugs lpeproject.org/blog/trumps-...

Proposed cuts to libraries, parks, CUNY, housing + health, while keeping NYPD + Corrections intact; proposed real property tax increases disproportionately affecting Black owners + most tenants; homeless encampment sweeps. Why is Z proposing these regressive measures, and how best can we respond? 🧵

NYC Parks: 0.57% of budget → projected to drop to 0.46% by 2030. NYC Libraries: 0.39% of expense budget vs 0.5% pledge. Mayor Mamdani’s first budget leaves big gaps between campaign promises and spending reality. My latest —> www.thecity.nyc/2026/02/19/m...

It's worth reminding each other every couple days that every delay you create, every horrible opportunity you deter means someone gets home to their family, might even mean someones actual life is saved. All of it is worth it.

Great thread. This is also true about that Jacobin article criticizing the turnout for the No Kings march. As someone who covered both demonstrations in June and October, I saw a few unions trying to pull together largest unions into organize contingents. Here’s a more rooted analysis. 1/3

worth applying to politics as well. when you're criticizing an action people take "taking the better action next time" is only one of the alternatives people will consider, and worth remembering that "not bothering at all" is another.

Not even an email from my own union or the local labor council. If the labor movement wants to build to a general strike, we should be engaging with the people most likely to be up for that, who are in the streets.

In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.

Jonathan M. Katz@katz.theracket.news

Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.

These newspapers that publish articles undermining basic human rights aren't doing it by accident. These administrators aren't making "mistakes." Moderate politicians aren't "confused." They're engaging in class solidarity and capitalism requires accepting fascism now. That's it. That's just it.

It's beyond time to recognize that the people in charge and the politicians and personalities responsible for fighting fascism are economically and politically intertwined with the need for America to become fascist. We've got more than enough evidence and people have to move beyond denial.

It's instructive and revealing to see a college president who oversaw the expelling of students protesting the killing of innocent people advocate for schools to start hosting "difficult speakers" who want to strip away rights from people of color, women, and gay and trans people.

You are up to date.
