Hello. Do you live in one of these states? If so, we need you.

TEXAS OHIO GEORGIA NORTH CAROLINA MICHIGAN IOWA ALASKA Are you in one of these states? Then youโ€™ve got an extra important role to play to protect the results of the midterms. Letโ€™s get into election protection formation.

The first step was halting authoritarian consolidation. The second step is protecting the vote and the election. The third step is going on offense.

Leaders of the No Kings movement are already gearing up for the next major grassroots campaign: Making sure congressional Democrats donโ€™t wimp out. My first piece at @newrepublic.com! (Reposted to update link card) newrepublic.com/article/2168...

The global pro-democracy, anti-fascist movement just notched two major wins today, after Students List in Serbia ousted strongman Aleksandar Vuฤiฤ‡ and Brazilian President Lula defeated the son of the man behind Brazilโ€™s Jan 6 to win reelection! In 9 days, U.S. next!

I just want to name that people overcame this. Even against a stacked deck, the good fight is worth it. Win or lose, it's worth it. And sometimes the good guys win.

Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses arenโ€™t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and peopleโ€™s power cut in Salvador, indigenous peopleโ€™s travel restricted

the reason you issue preemptive mass pardons is to reassure junior staff who are shitting themselves that theyโ€™re safe and they donโ€™t have to flip on you. going to be very important to push back on their validity, which is nil, preemptively also

I met with Finer, Sullivan, and a bunch of Biden's senior people several times throughout 2023-2024 and I cannot stress enough how maddening it is to watch them reposition now after spending the time they were actually in power gaslighting the shit out of everyone

this is why we did a ton of polling on winning messages and what we found is that cracking down on corruption is really, really important for any cost-of-living argument because people straight up don't believe any of your promises if you don't show you're serious about accountability

Schooley@schooley.bsky.social

If Democrats actually win big because people want a check on Trump corruption I expect every move to do so will be covered in the corporate media as being risky to their 2028 position.

I can confirm. Indivisible Action spends about a dime of every dollar raised on fundraising costs, which is very efficient. They are a good example of what a genuine grassroots operation looks like.

Weโ€™ve seen a lot of recent reporting on shady fundraising tactics that get Democratic consultants rich, but donโ€™t do much to help Democratic campaigns. So let us be as clear as humanly possible: Every dollar you donate today will be spent on winning the midterms and protecting the results.

Honestly huge kudos to @mehdirhasan.bsky.social for getting Yglesias to spell this horrifying logic out so clearly

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

I would really appreciate if the conspiracy theorists who think I'm a far-left Jew paying millions of protesters could get together with the folks who think I'm Israeli zionist controlled opposition and issue a final ruling. Pick one conspiracy theory people, this is confusing!!!

This is exactly right. They're trying to replicate the bottomlessly cynical approach without Trump and they're face-planting

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

The deeper reason Trump, Vance, and Ramaswamy are backing the vile rape ad is they think MAGA politicsโ€”the cruelty, the depravity, the viciousnessโ€”is still ascendant. They think doing this esesentially puts Trump on the ballot. Me and @jimswift.bsky.social on this: newrepublic.com/article/2169...

They're throwing spaghetti at the wall. It doesn't mean it's not really dangerous - and whatever they try, we'll be prepared to counter - but folks should be clear that this is not some well-orchestrated highly competent plan unfurling.

Nicholas Grossman@nicholasgrossman.bsky.social

The reason we keep hearing about desperate schemes to boost Republican chances in the midtermsโ€”Announce we're buying Russian diesel! Sue to preemptively reject a Democratic victory in Alaska!โ€”is because they don't have a secret plan that will overturn a midterm loss, not because they do.

A true "have you no shame" moment. Kudos to this reporter.

Story after story of disgraceful, dehumanizing cruelty and intentional neglect. We need accountability for every person and company who has driven this horrific attack on our immigrant friends and neighbors.

Emiliano Andrade-Covarrubias has died at a GEO-owned for-profit concentration camp in Texas. DHS denied him life saving medication, including for heart disease after he complained of chest tightness and trouble breathing. Emiliano was a father, husband, son who deserved dignity and due process.

Grateful to @vanhollen.senate.gov for demanding answers to this incredibly troubling pattern

โ€œThe incident raises serious concerns about Metaโ€™s impartial handling of voting information and political speechโ€”particularly in light of the companyโ€™s close financial relationship with the Trump administration.โ€

We are letting one greedy insecure k-hole Nazi fuck it up for 8 billion of us. Heโ€™s killing millions bc his daddy was mean to him and he loathes himself. Remember when Elon told Tucker Carlson if Trump didnโ€™t get elected he was โ€œfuckedโ€ and going to prison? Yeah, we can still do that. We must.

Leah Gremlinberg โŒ๐Ÿ‘‘@leahgreenberg.bsky.social

It's Elon or global democracy. Choose one.

This is obviously politically motivated and is part of his ongoing campaign to weaponize the state to punish dissent and specifically target Black women. Hell no.

Trump and his wretched circle of cynical little bigots are counting on you to hate Black women as much as they do. Esp Black women like Ilhan Omar, Louise Lucas, and Monica McIver. He's counting on you not to care about this blatant abuse committed in his name by a corrupt DOJ. Prove him wrong.

No, Freedom Summer volunteers didn't take selfies or post tweets -- because that technology hadn't been invented yet. But when they were getting trained in Ohio before going down, they were *all over* the media of their day. Here's a paragraph on it (since cut from my book for space constraints)

This is unacceptable. We can't let billionaires and tech companies like Mark Zuckerberg and Meta censor our movement and meddle in our democracy. No corporation should have this level of power over free speech in this country.

Your takeaway from the Israeli statement should be to remember that the 3.4 million Palestinians of the West Bank live under a permanent and unaccountable military-security state that has existed for nearly sixty years, and that every major political party in Israel is committed to maintaining it.

Brad Lander@bradlander.bsky.social

The Israeli Foreign Ministry is lying. No coordination was required, and we were never told that it was. We were not in a restricted security area. We did not pass any checkpoints.

this year's October Surprise is Vivek Ramaswamy blowing up his own campaign and taking a bunch of leading Republicans down with him

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

WOW -- Vance *defends* Vivek's reprehensible ad ๐Ÿ‘‡ Q: Ramaswamy's campaign put out a controversial ad featuring his opponent's mother. Some Republicans are backing away. Do you think it was appropriate? JD VANCE: Well, I'll be honest. Whether the ad was appropriate or not is not really my concern.

An underrated reason why the Trump admin has struggled to use the powers of the state to more effectively suppress the opposition: many of the people in charge are genuinely pickled in right-wing fever dream conspiracies and it impedes their ability to develop reality-based repression strategies

Julian Sanchez@normative.bsky.social

The main story of the GOP over the past decade is the takeover of the party establishment by people who actually believe the nonsense they formerly deployed to rile up the rubes without actually buying into it themselves.

Israel behaves this way because decades of American policy have led them to believe they can do whatever they want without facing consequences. If you want to change that, you must create consequences for their rampant violations of human rights and international law. Condemnations alone are empty,

that's real weird because there were Maine Indivisible groups in your office every single day during the Kavanaugh confirmation repeatedly telling you he was going to do exactly that

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Susan Collins on Kavanaugh: "I'm very disappointed in his his vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. There was no way for me to anticipate that."

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "I'm studying his body. I've never studied the body of a man before. It's not my thing. Nothing wrong with it, of course. But it's never been my thing. But I looked at his ass. I said, 'His ass, shit, it's like a pile of muscle.' Then I looked at his legs and I said, 'Man, his feet are big.'"
