I was incredibly honored to speak with JJ about my disabled librarian book and unspeakably saddened to learn of his passing last month. Please join me in honoring his work by listening to some of his amazing interviews in his Disability in Libraries and Information Studies journal.

Getting to have this conversation with JJ was a treasure. Seldom do I get to talk about disability like this. JJ was so thoughtful and generous that we talked for another hour after the recorder was off. This morning I learned that JJ passed away shortly after we talked. I'm grateful we met.

If you haven't read @jjpionke.bsky.social's obituary yet, do it now. He names names about the institutions who let him down as he tried to navigate the tenure process while disabled. jj-pionke-memorial.org Please join me in donating to the JJ Pionke Memorial Scholarship for disabled LIS students. 📚

JJ was a champion for both libraries and disabled folks (as well as the intersection of the two). I was lucky enough to work with him on accessibility of an organization we were members of and to later co-author a paper with him about that project. His loss is felt immensely. Thank you, JJ. 💙

We will be releasing JJ's final interviews in October. He was incredibly passionate about this project, about promoting and celebrating the work of disabled creatives -- theorists, novelists, poets, artists -- and about letting them tell their own disability stories in their own words.

We focus on the experiences of library or archive workers or users, or people who work with libraries in other ways, in relation to disability. We take a disability positive, disability centered approach. (You don't have to love your condition, but you do have to value disabled people.)

"it does a real disservice to our nuance as complete human beings to suggest that all of our thoughts + feelings about ourselves, our community, our world can be summarized, condensed into language that everyone will understand immediately....our lives are complex, our writing can also be complex.
