Unveiling the cover for THE DRAGON HAS SOME COMPLAINTS! Garrodigh is a curmudgeonly three-headed dragon who pretends to be tame so he can eat for free at the local dragon-riding academy. Unfortunately, the rider he's assigned to is... a lot. Coming Summer 2026 from DAW (US) and Arcadia (UK)!

Even among people who use AI, nobody wants somebody else's slop. They like using AI to get out of doing work for other people. Use it for them instead of doing work, and they're not so happy.

China’s first AI-generated theatrical feature has flopped, earning just $181,000 in its first weekend. By contrast, the scrappy ‘Niu Lai’ turned its crude animation into a viral attraction, grossing nearly $10 million a couple of months ago. www.cartoonbrew.com/box-office-r...

So much to say about Brazil, not least of which is the role that Erika Hilton, a Black trans leader and most voted woman politician in Brazil, played in mobilizing folks for Lula. She was behind the critical, concrete, economic promise of shorter work-week. theprint.in/feature/erik...

theprint.inWho is Erika Hilton? Black trans politician was one of Lula’s loudest campaignersErika Hilton’s electoral triumph comes amid a hostile environment. Brazil has the highest number of reported murders of transgender people in the world, with 80 recorded in 2025.

TIL that Steven Spielberg was developing the Cape Fear remake and Martin Scorsese was developing Schindler’s List, and then the two of them TRADED projects.

Most lopsided trade of all time? You get: the greatest WWII movie ever. He gets: a pop culture footnote with Robert DeNiro playing a serial rapist with Bugs Bunny powers.

At one point he had a Whatsapp group with 10 million people in it, coordinating action. Which I didn't even think whatsapp was infrastructurally designed to support. And yes, whatsapp is of course a meta network, but the strategy was to be everywhere, to act redundantly, to be unbannable.

Serbia! Holy crap, congratulations on kicking out Vucic!

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

This ballot makes me smile. Thomas Ha rules. Kathleen Jennings rules. Renan Bernardo rules. Eden Royce's Psychopomp & Circumstance is one of the first books I ever blurbed--it's brilliant. Wendy Wagner's run on Nightmare Magazine is one of my favorite editorial runs ever.

A lot of stellar work didn't win. The whole ballot shines. If you haven't read much from last year, this ballot is a great place to start.

This tracks with what I've heard from self-published authors. AI slop has flooded the market and Amazon has done basically nothing to help.

👨‍⚖️ TL;DR: AI doesn't need to write high-quality books for non-AI book writers to get hurt. Cheap books at massive volume are enough and they've cut what the average human-written book earns in most genres and pushed human titles down the bestseller ranks. (10/n)

One of my big bugbears in publishing is Trad Author Vs. Self-Pub Author. I can't express the admiration I have for people who can make self-pub work. Both career paths are hard, and I hate seeing things get harder for my fellow writers.

look, nothing is simple and i have no parsimonious explanation for anything here, but a student protest movement, focused on corruption & authoritarianism, just won a major european election. a big deal.

💼4📚 At the core of it TDHSC is about characters recognizing their problems and being willing to work on them, even if that means accepting help. If you want a break from seeing how bad things can be, it's worth spending time with these characters that remind us that it's possible to be better, too.

Ever notice "abusers can grow and change" uniformly comes from people who haven't actually checked if someone grew or changed? It's like a magic wand of sentiment they wave over harm.

People always say to focus on personal growth, but I've got dozens of growths and they sure aren't helping me.

UK friends, they're practically giving away this wonderful book.

UK readers! My publisher made The Dragon Has Some Complaints just 99p for Halloween! A curmudgeonly dragon pretends to be tame so he can eat for free at the local dragon riding academy. But his new rider is... a lot.

I just finished @wiswell.bsky.social's The Dragon Has Some Complaints (after binging it over maybe a week) and, y'all, this book is a true delight and so worth a read! Between the humor, action, and truly heartfelt moments it is such a wholesome story (and a world I want more of!). Loved it!! :)
