The Louvre is impregnable! Mate we all know a chippy, sparky and locky halfway through their apprenticeships can break in after a stop off at Bunnings for some tools, their mate’s forklift and a cheeky sausage sizzle, so…

The Government™ has made an ad about all these protests happening around the world, and it’s surprisingly honest and informative.

My library hold on the ebook of Nine Goblins is here! It’s the perfect cosy read for a stormy day, and feels a bit Pratchetty so far which is just *happy sigh*. After last night’s watchalong of Practical Magic with a mate who’s also crook right now, this is the perfect start to spooky season.

It’s the kind of day when you open the curtains and see the best option is making a little snack and drink, topping up your hot water bottle, and going straight back to bed. Maybe you’ll have a little read, maybe you’ll watch an ep of Midnight Diner, maybe napping will happen.

I can’t put my finger on it, but there’s something incredibly comforting and reassuring about Japanese shows like Midnight Diner and Hot Spot. The actors aren’t searingly goodlooking, the homes and workplaces are unvarnished, the food looks tasty and it’s mostly regular people connecting.

Kiwis and Aussies! This might be ages away from being something Pharmac can access but how cool is this?

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Shout out to Samuel Parnell who was such a shit-hot carpenter he could refuse to work more than 8 hours a day and his employers had to agree to it but instead of just taking the win he worked to get the 8 hour day for OTHER WORKERS. my.christchurchcitylibraries.com/labour-day/

Has anyone ever been lying with their feet up, wiggled each set of toes alternately and thought, wow these look like super stubby sea anemones flowing in a sea of air? And in that world, the fish swimming past might be like, disembodied fingers and toes? Or is it just me?

Read a few pages of Nine Goblins this summer and loved it, but couldn’t afford to buy. Happily my library have just added it to their app for spooky season, so I’m now on the reserve list. Really excited to get into it when the time comes.

On tonight’s insomnia watch: The Diplomat. I’m on episode 3 and wow is it nice seeing an American President who seems vaguely competent, even if they’re fully fiction. The Prime Minister though… I know who they’re satirising but *sigh* it’s all of them.

I feel like Jaws might have played out differently if this wee dude had been the shark in question. Look at it go!

Just $196 shy of target now - so close!

Give Out Day ends tonight, and Ōtautahi Rainbow Spaces Collective still need to reach their $5K goal. ŌRSC are raising money to furnish a rainbow community hub. I'm stoked for their mahi - it'll be great to have a local drop in center. giveout-day-2026.raiselysite.com/orsc

Oh. Oh no. The new book is The Starving Ones by Caitlin Starling. It’s great but I missed the cannibalism ref and a @tkingfisher.com recommendation… which means it’ll be superb but V V Scary and I don’t do horror well 🤦‍♀️ I adore T Kingfisher’s books but can only read the tame ones. What have I done 🤣

I’ve been able to leave home for the first time in weeks, and since it’s Bookshop Day and there’s a wee indie shop in my neighbourhood, today’s spoons were spent on book joy. I randomly chatted with another customer (in a 3-piece pin-striped suit, masc women have great game) about medical misogyny…

the rise of fascism, the weirdness of having an invisible disability and ableism in queer spaces. I forgot how much fun serendipitous conversations can be! Bookshops rock. I will deffo go back to this one when my baseline increases.

My dad died suddenly just over a week ago, after being diagnosed with cancer the week before. I thought losing my job and becoming bedbound with Long Covid was this year’s kicker but being too ill to fly home for his funeral or be with family has floored me. For those who’ve been through it… how?

Have hit the “huh, I’ve never watched Nosferatu” stage of grief and insomnia. I don’t think I’ve watched a silent movie since I was uni, but I don’t want to be either asleep or awake, dramatic vampires will do nicely.

Yea, for though we walk through the valley of the shadow of winter, it’s not all fear, for potatoes and stew and cheesy bakes and hot chocolate are with us and shall comfort us.

YOU NEED MORE POTATOES THIS WEATHER — Claude Atkinson (for the British Potato Marketing Board), 1930s

I can imagine Bill Nighy’s character from Underworld, Eric from True Blood and Lestat from the recent Tv adaptation hanging out as a crew. That’d be a fun lil trio of diva vamps.

Watching Underworld 2 for the first time, because insomnia: - awww the return of PVC, greatcoats and eyeliner - Bat wings! - Derek Jacobi died splendidly in some things, so Sean Bean could die dramatically in more - Salina in the voice of a bored Lestat “I have the blood of Akasha in my veins”

- evil hot redhead! Be nice to have a hot hero redhead but hey - why is Kate Beckinsale wearing 1980s frosted lippy? - a sex scene with all the charm of a fridge opening. They’re both so hot! Do better, choreographers - pedantic comment about coloured chalk in a damp cave - that’s not how guns work

- in the last movie Salina saved Scott Speedman, surely this time they’ll reverse that. The couple that kills together etc - Daddy Bat is the only one fighting with flair, guys. A helicopter? 😂😂 - WITH HIS OWN WING! Yes ma’am! Finally, a cunty move. - this matched my brain fog level

I know there are some Welsh speakers on here, and I’d love a bit of help checking the accuracy and pronunciation of a phrase. A family member died this week (diaspora Welsh, from when speaking was forbidden), and I’m giving a short eulogy. I’d like to send them home with their family’s language…

and want to do it respectfully. They were Christian and the phrase “Hunodd yn yr Iesu” has popped up online and seems appropriate. Any tips would be super appreciated (our whānau/iwi’s from South Glamorgan if that helps).

Got my first Smith-Waite tarot deck today and becuase I usually use a more stylistic cartoon deck, it’s intriguing to see the level of detail and the esoteric card descriptions. My fave is the King of Wands, who is “dark, ardent and lithe”. That is a VIBE. It’s such a snapshot of its time.

Speaking of which, The High Priestess represents “the woman who interests the Querant (if male)”. Yeeeah i’m gonna ignore gender when I use these, thank you very much. Some great vocab words though: calumny! Pusillanimity! Bewrayment! Contrarieties! Roguery! Mental alienation! Certitude! Purgation!

Watching The Big Sleep (old movies are way more spoonie friendly) and some of the quotes are great. “A half-smart guy. That’s what I always draw. Never once a guy who’s smart all around the course. Never once!” - the henchwoman when the henchman gets ruffled by Marlowe.
