The HCAO won an Emmy Award for this story on Marvin Haynes’ exoneration and what our office has done to prevent wrongful convictions. Correcting injustices of the past and best practices to avoid them in the future are critical to the mission of the HCAO.

links-2.govdelivery.comJustice Reimagined: Preventing the Next Wrongful Conviction (HCAO Conviction Integrity Unit)In this Regional Emmy® Award-nominated documentary, At just 16 years old, Marvin Haynes was sentenced to life in prison for a crime he did not commit—a murder inside a Minneapolis flower shop. Based on a deeply flawed eyewitness identification and a rushed investigation, Marvin’s conviction exemplifies the devastating consequences of a system that prioritizes convictions over truth- leaving the real killer unaccountable. Told in Marvin's own words, alongside voices from the legal team that fought for his freedom, Justice Reimagined is a powerful portrait of resilience, injustice, and transformation. For nearly two decades, Marvin held onto hope from behind bars, teaching himself the law, discovering others like him, and refusing to let the system define his worth. Through the lens of his exoneration—secured by the tireless work of the Great North Innocence Project and a historic shift in accountability by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office—the film exposes how wrongful convictions happen and how they can be undone. It also marks a turning point: the formation of a Conviction Integrity Unit aimed at preventing future injustices. This is more than the story of one man’s freedom. It’s a call to reckon with the past and reimagine justice for the future. https://www.hennepinattorney.org/ AWARDS & RECOGNITION 🏆 2026 Alliance for Community Media Hometown Media Award — Winner 🏅 2026 Upper Midwest Regional Emmy® Award — Winner

Josh Turek of Iowa, Democrat, comes out with one of the worst anti-trans ads yet. Not only is it an anti-sports ad, it proposes a ban on federal funding for gender affirming care. That would hit all medicaid and medicare patients, and any ACA federally-subsidized plans as well. Horrific.

If plan on standing up to fascism, prepare yourself for the facts that you will be brutalized by police while your attackers are protected. That's fascism in a nutshell. In group, the law protects but doesn't bind. Out group, the law binds but does not protect.

I have refused to use the term “Somali gangs” despite tremendous pressure. Why? It’s a political narrative, not an accurate descriptor of gun violence, even if it was committed by a Somali youth. Who is driving this narrative? Republicans, the Strib, and police. Brilliant reporting below.

DEEP DIVE is up! How the Star Tribune turned Republican “Somali gangs” rhetoric into an election-year crime narrative—and helped give demands for expanded local, state, and federal enforcement the authority of news.

NYPD keeps insisting it’s not working with ICE in the narrowest scope of not literally participating in kidnappings but then goes silent when people present evidence of ICE using their precincts/parking lots, of NYPD doing crowd control. Big difference in technical and de facto assistance.

I've been saying this. If we do this at the White House with even 50,000 people, we could be having a much different conversation in the matter of just a couple of days.
