Probably shouldn't say but...God, I needed this; us little writers don't expect fame/fortune, but thrive on the crumbs of kind words :) "What I particularly love about it is how Latta fits such carefully drawn characters and so much subtle emotion into a very action-packed short story." ~M. Haskins

Strange Horizons turns 25 this year, which is pretty much an eternity in the world of spec fic zines, and I had the privilege of going through the archives for a special short fiction roundup: 2 x 25 Gems from Strange Horizons’ Archives strangehorizons.com/wordpress/fi...

INKTOBER Day 27: Swamp Thing! (I think I love you...) My favourite comic book monster in honour of co-creator Bernie Wrightson's birthday. Here he is in B&W and colour. Ink and coloured inks on hot press watercolour paper. 9x12 inches.

Another dip into nostalgia that's fun n thoughtful.

Always dishesrtening when i open bluesky snd see my notifications lit up...but it's just some sort of spam/bot "liking" a post (or maybe it is a legit human but not someone genuinely interested in my work or something i posted).

First of a series on Wondy thru the eras (a concept thzt could be app!ied to msny-a super); if they're all as good as tbis shoukd be a fun cycle. A "think piece" should make you think (not just tell you what you know) and i looked up Margaret Cavendish and a few other things after reading this:) 1/2

(I contributed an essay to the series - just to acknowledge any cnflict of interest lol; but this is a good piece and the series shoukd be fun. :) 2/2

Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too. Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course. – George

An essay about Wonder Woman that opens with Margeret Cavendish’s 1666 novel The Blazing World? Now I’m getting excited!

Random plot idea: subversion of Lord of the Flies. Kids marooned build a better, more intuitively just society than the real world of billionaire oligarchs and mass poverty. But adults show up and ruin it.

Having contributed to this WW essay cycle, I read muttering "It's not a competition. It's not a comp-JFC! She opens citing a 400 yr old literary work! I'm sooo cooked!" 😀 Seriously, tho; a great piece. What i like about Shelfdust: the mix of thoughtful n fun (Though I'll have to look up dehisced)

Speaking of writing #CaptainCanuck novels...look what I found in old papers circa I was a kid/teen. Hmmm. Wonder if I liked Captain Canuck? Notice my ham-fisted attempt at Freeman-esque line work :) (The punching of Captain America was purely in the spirit of superhero misunderstandings, of course)

Given some of my recent (and up-coming) work i clearly have a bias (lol); but playing in someone else's sandbox can be fun (i especially like the point in tbe tge thread about working *within* restrictions can be a fun exercise) Thread👇

There is a doofus currently arguing here that no "creative talent" would choose to write tie-ins, and since I just did a panel this weekend on why creative talents choose to write IP, here are a few reasons. Non-financial reasons, for fun and because frankly it usually doesn't pay that well.

This starts tomorrow!! It’s been a huge amount of work and the writers have been putting together some incredible stuff, I think! I hope people enjoy reading tomorrow and the series gets people talking more about Wonder Woman!

Yep yep this. I'm not celebrating over here. Sure, we've postponed (another) separatist referendum bid (they're not going to give up, because the people funding them and pulling their strings are not), but. *Confirmation* that Alberta is mostly bigot by volume? Not fun.

Kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight ~ one of those lyrics that pop into my head from time to time. Dont know why. (Looks at the state of the world) Completely random, i guess.

I'm prob going to be doing some self-promotion in the coming weeks so just a pre-emptive reminder: re-posts don't cost any of us anything but can help others :D Sure, pick n choose who you repost, when n how often, but there's a reason folks like to talk about social media as being a "community"

Can you imagine the Canadian superhero Captain Canuck... à la...Will Eisner? Stan Lee & Jack Kirby? reimagined by the likes of Don McGregor/Steve Englehart/Tony Isabella?? Mark Waid??? Geoff Johns???? (*) From glib to ghostly to gritty Can you imagine... THE MANY LIVES OF CAPTAIN CANUCK ???? 1/2

Interesting point. (2012's John Carter movie is another example). Simply a cliche/trope? A response to social factors? Or merely a belief that gritty/melancholy improves on drama? (I'm thinking how Star Trek TMP and WOK both begin, not about PTSD, but with Kirk in a funk).

Guy Gavriel Kay@guygavrielkay.bsky.social

Has anyone written about what seems to be a trend to do adaptations of established works through the filter of trauma/PTSD? I’m thinking currently of The Odyssey and East of Eden. I also noticed it years ago in a remake in Canada of Anne of Green Gables. NOT being critical, it is just interesting.

Thread👇 (This is why i randomly repost and/or mention things and *encourage* others to do the same! - in addition to plugging your own works or posting general social-political musings)

This post is unavailable.

Rsndom comic book thought: the moench-sienkiewicz Moon Knight was a flawed but ambitious snd - in many ways unique - attempt to try and approximate a "realistic" superhero, borrowing themes and tropes from crime dramas and thillers as much as superheroes.

I submitted a story to an antho; it was about superheroes, an attempt to resurrect dinosaur ghosts as a CIA plot, and climaxed with animated dinosaur skeletons eating a convoy-style mob of Alberta separatists. Weirdly, it was rejected. hmm. Too niche? Or just bad? Lol (Well, i took a swing)

#AICouldNever this is exactly it. exactly it. utterly wonderful brought to my attention by @taldragon.bsky.social

When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.

There's a certain stage of growing old where you dont feel *that* old...but people you think of as your relative peers are actually a generation or more younger than you! Aggh! And the TV, movies, comics, music, they grew up on and regard as *old* "classics"...are stuff you think of as "new"

Sad/depressing: watching a yt comic book intervuew and every ad was for...AI. This may not have been the vid producer's fault (aren't some yt vids supported by generic ads, not "sponsors"?) But it still seemed problematic. Like a health food channel sponsored by Chernobyl Pops cereal.

There's a famous Superman line: In this world there is right and there is wrong and that distinction isnt very difficukt to make. (More/less) It's a quote that seems more profound, not less, as i get older & look at the world (wrong flourishes in our endless ability to justify compromising with it)

This should be an interesting/thought-provoking cycle (in honour of Wondy's 85th anniversary I believe). I contributed one essay and so have been looking forward to reading the others :)

An interesting piece (that relates to one of my interests: how pop entertainment processes and reflects the society and world it exists within)...

Given the history of US tie in comics, is this a new chapter in Canadian pop culture? Murdoch Mysteries...the comic! Killjoys...? due South...? Strange Paradise...? Or...duh-duh-duh...Wojeck! (Anyone who knows me knows i'm only half-kidding lol; i've spent my life defending CDN pop culture!)
