Back in the 80s, when I was a Foreign Service Officer in West Berlin, I was asked by a German what really was the difference between the USSR and the USA. I told her that the difference in our values was reflected in the nature of the biggest annual parades we threw. In the Soviet Union, …

Am I the only one who saw that the announcement of the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten- Windsor had come from the Thames Valley Police and immediately wondered if Inspector Morse was on the case?

There could be no more effective means to destroy the NATO alliance than to pit its ultimate guarantor - the US - vs the rest of the alliance. Ultimately, this is what Vladimir Putin sought by whispering in Trump’s ear about alliance members “not paying their dues” (a false assertion, but 1/X

4/X I have little doubt that Putin has been fostering this dream about Greenland in both his phone calls with Trump and through his discussions with Steve Witkopf, the ultimate “useful idiot”. Lest we forget, Putin is an experienced intelligence officer.

5/5 The only question is whether Republicans in Congress (particularly, the Senate) will show any backbone and try to block any attempts to use this to disrupt the alliance. The future of the alliance - and, indeed, of Western Democracy - rests on this thin reed. I fear it may break too easily.

2/X but one which fit nicely in with a certain RW mindset). However, Putin’s attack on Ukraine strengthened the alliance and forced NATO members in Europe to start spending more on their own defense. This served to undermine this line of attack on the alliance.

3X Enter the controversy over Greenland, a proposal which Trump launched a trial balloon on during his first term, one which failed miserably. But, now, he is pushing it with greater vigor, and there is nobody in his orbit willing to stand up to him. Not in his inner circle, not in the Cabinet.

One of the central achievements of the Affordable Care Act was to *raise* the Medicaid eligibility threshold to 133% of the federal poverty level—because everyone understood that there are plenty of folks who couldn't otherwise afford health care even though they're just over that (arbitrary) line.

Markwayne Mullin: "There are 35 million people that live below the poverty line inside the US. There are over 70 million people signed up for Medicaid. Now you're gonna tell me there's not room to make cuts?"

I was rewatching The Princess Bride when there was a quote I had never before noticed. After they climb the Cliffs of Insanity, they are leaving Inigo Montoya to face the Man in Black. Fezzick turns to him and says, “You be careful! People who wear masks are not to be trusted.”

Reposting this as it is appropriate for this upcoming weekend.

The same people who try to tell us “we’re a constitutional republic, not a democracy” are complaining that the courts can’t stop Trump because “that is what the people elected him to do”.

their biggest parade featured thousands of troops, masses of tanks, and ICBMs. In the US, our biggest parade featured giant balloons of Bullwinkle, Snoopy and Underdog. In the intervening 40 years, we have lost that.

This is ultimate kakistocracy, just a step below Caligula appointing a horse to be a Roman Senator.

Placing an entry-level officer who has only served one complete overseas tour into this critical role sends a clear message about the value this administration places on experience and professional progression. Read our statement: afsa.org/afsa-stateme...
