Free local magazine through the letterbox today with a section by a "beer writer" on what & where to drink in town. They've consistently spelt a brewery's name wrong, so I'll take with a pinch of salt their words.

I've never looked so much like a shoplifter than when I see myself on these cams.

I quite liked the sweetcorn flavour crisps - like buttered corn on the cob - but can't settle on one flavour of anything for long & must try new things. These are pretty much exactly as you'd think they taste & are fine.

#homebrew Vienna Saison. Vienna malt, invert sugar syrup, Bobek hops, Saison yeast. 6.5%. Spicy, tastes of invert syrup even though it's quite dry & has a gentle tang of lactic acid.

I had one commercial beer tonight - Ossett Excelsius. Does exactly what it says on the tin; hoppy pale ale. Gentle & not too bitter, but big on a pine resinous hoppiness. I like this a lot.

This one is #homebrew lager. It's very subtle, so there's no hiding place for defects. There's a little diacetyl & hardly any bitterness or hops, but certainly drinkable.

Ooh I like this. Nicely hoppy & bitter like a traditional IPA. I can't place the hops though - something modern. Could drink this all night.

This is *not* one of the few good examples. It says "bright, crisp...clean" & it is none of these things. There's a modest yeast bite & gentle diacetyl taste to it. £3+ for a can from Asda when I could have had a much superior Veltins for half that.

I also have a British pilsener to test whether I should give up on British lager altogether, as the few good examples can are matched by mass produced, miles cheaper imports.

Been to Asda in the big smoke of Carlizzle this morning to get stuff you can't get in the pokey little supermarkets in the Cumbrian Riviera of Cockermouth.

ok but this is actually an appropriate way to honor Bacchus and i think the ancients would have agreed

My latest #homebrew is opened this evening: Vienna Saison. 100% Vienna malt, 100% Bobek hops in the boil only. WHC Farmhouse Vibes yeast. Suitably weird, peppery & a little lactic. Nice enough right now, but maybe it needs another week or so conditioning.

Not starting the day with this, I forgot to mention it last night. As I've said many times: NA beer isn't a substitute for beer, but for overly sweet soft drinks. As such this is quite nice grapefruit flavoured pop.

I found that The Substance was on the iPlayer & watched it. It's not subtle at all & a bit crap. I kept thinking "well it's not supposed to be reality, it's all metaphor for the showbiz industry", but that wears thin quickly. I did persevere to the end though & I needn't have bothered.

I've still got a few bottles of #homebrew Bergamot Witbier left. A mistake due to getting the wrong yeast - it was supposed to be a heffe - has turned out well. Much more bitter & hoppy than a Witbier stereotypically should be, but I don't want to brew what I can buy cheaply in the shops.

If I wanted my country to prosper, I'd invest in education primarily. I guess it's only because it takes a generation to pay off - and someone else will be in power, taking the credit for it - that governments don't.

Driving northwest there was a great sun pillar just after sunset. It was just about there on my drive home, so stopped but it doesn't show up on the pic. Still a nice post-sunset sky though looking towards Maryport from Dearham.

Go to your camera roll, search boat and post a picture you like. This has always made me smile. Chemists everywhere will know the element bromine's name derives from the ancient Greek bromos meaning stench.

Czech Pilsner from Lidl for £1.69. Nothing wrong with this beer at all. Tastes like a stereotypical Czech lager. If I were to have a gathering I'd happily buy a tonne of these.

As soon as I tasted the Lost And Grounded Keller Pils it reminded me of Veltins. One is £3.50 for a 440ml can in Booths & one is £1.50 a 500ml can. Clean, dry, bitter, gentle grassy Noble hoppiness. I'm a big fan of this mass market German beer.

Had to take the car for a run to charge the battery after it hadn't moved in a fortnight. Went along Route A66 & ended up at Booth's in Keswick. In a differently sane moment I spent money on some beers.

Beery folk bang on about this being the business & they are right. Dry, clean, bitter, gentle noble hop character & looking at the ingredients; water, barley malt, hops & yeast.
