So, advice for potential PhD students re emailing potential supervisors to connect with them. 1) Do not use AI. Like seriously, don't. It's a Dunning-Kruger issue ... your email might look good to you, but for those of us in our fields AND getting a million of these, the generic language is OBVIOUS

Need a Harvester judgment-type ruling somewhere that basically says that if you can't do business in a climate responsible manner, then perhaps you shouldn't be doing business. (nb this is not the same as saying all steel manufacturing and cement plants should immediately shut down)

who could have possibly predicted this

For example: Metronidazole, sold under brand names like Flagyl and Metrogyl and the DO NOT DRINK alcohol. No current evidence... eg doi:10.1345/aph.1A066

My father used to talk about this in medicine—occasionally you’d find some “common knowledge” factoid that, it you followed it back five hops down the citation chain, always terminated with some poorly designed 15-person study from the 30s that was wildly inadequate to support the claim.

Dear USofA academics, please stop assuming the world revolves around you and your country and please put the very simple USA somewhere in your abstract. The rest of the world does it, how about being better global academic citizens...

This is a moral atrocity and it needs to be loudly condemned as such. There is a reason that democracies *don't* do publicly televised executions (and why many don't execute people at all): it inculcates and rewards bloodthirst, which corrupts the spirit and corrodes the foundation of the polity.

In Crikey today, I have a long read on Canberra’s endearment with AI and the dubious promise of data centre riches. While Australia’s creatives are being sold down the river, you don’t need to fire up Claude to spot some cracks in the hype-doom sales pitch ($) www.crikey.com.au/2026/10/08/a...

crikey.com.auCanberra is 'drinking the Kool-Aid' on AI. Where will it take us?The Albanese government is treating the promises of AI and data centre investment like a digital mining boom. How does it sit within Labor's broader social project?

I'd suspect a vast majority of the heterosexual community would be stunned to hear that up until *1992* consensual homosexual activities could be prosecuted as service offences under Australian military discipline law. Or that only *now* can such convictions be removed.

Feels obvious to say but we should say it more: AI and data centres are being pushed and supported by politicians, celebrities and the media because money. It's money. Existentially challenging quantities of money. See also: fossil fuels, the arms trade, gambling.

Pew tested AI synthetic surveys against actual survey data. Conclusion: “This experiment taught us that, at this time, AI models are not an adequate replacement for traditional polling on topics of broad public importance.” This is an all time bad idea. No need to hedge with “at this time.”

Damn I hope Shoebridge in charge of the Greens means they get a stronger return at the next election. It should by any measure.

David Shoebridge unloads on 2GB’s James Willis for distorting compassion for Palestinians facing genocide as “anger & hate” & fires back on claim he only targets Israel reminding him of his record “it may be convenient for u not to report that, but that’s u not doing your job”💥

There's this one business school prof who keeps writing about how AI has basically mastered and rendered irrelevant all of the entrepreneurship lessons he teaches. I think he's right. But I also think that says something *very specific* about the pre-existing nature of his field.

I’m excited to step up as Deputy Leader of the @Greens alongside @DavidShoebridge. My generation has grown up seeing politicians sell out our future for corporate greed: delaying climate action while housing, childcare, and living costs get harder to afford. It has to change.
