We told 21 stories about lesser known people/events from baseball history in 2025! We covered topics such as; an early baseball family dynasty, probably the worst team ever, a race riot, a crazy fan, a Silver King, and a superstar prospect dying on the field… But here’s our 5 Favourites from 2025:

Great thread - also, it’s always the Buffalo Bisons

I missed a big birth anniversary over the weekend. The term “the best player you’ve never heard of” gets thrown around a lot. It’s possible that right up until the moment I first heard of him, Mexican slugger Nelson Barrera was that guy for me. Nelson Barrera Romellón was born 69 years ago Saturday.

Pete Hill was born #OTD in 1882. The Baseball Hall of Famer starred for various Negro League teams in the early 1900s. Lived the latter part of his life in #Buffalo, playing semipro ball for Pete Hill’s Colored Stars & the Buffalo Red Caps. Read more here: sabr.org/bioproj/pers...

Some of these Latin American legends I’ve been learning about were super interesting stories. Some were just plain cool dudes. And some were under-the-radar all-time greats. Silvio García, born 113 years ago today, checked ALL the boxes. Here’s a detailed thread from last year.

There are a handful of players who never played in the AL/NL and barely played in the Negro Leagues (if at all) who I am convinced were Hall of Fame talents. One of them is Cuban shortstop Silvio García, who was born 112 years ago tomorrow.

so the final four are * a team that has never won the World Series in its 28 seasons * a team that has never won the World Series in its 57 seasons * a team that hasn’t won the World Series in 77 seasons * Dodgers

I just learned about Olivia Taylor. She owned the Indianapolis Clowns after her husband C.I. Taylor passed away. Fun to learn new and important things about baseball history after all these years of studying.

41 years ago today, knuckleballer Phil Niekro tossed a shutout for the Yankees against the Blue Jays on the final day of the season at Exhibition Stadium to earn his 300th MLB win. At the time, the 46-year-old Niekro became the oldest MLBer to throw a shutout.

More batters hit .300 in 2026 (7) than did in 1968 (6). I feel like there's a lot of people would be stunned by that. It certainly wasn't "but launch angle" back then, and it's not really now, either.

“He was socked in the jaw by Lou Gehrig in 1925 after making a crack to the effect that the Yankee first baseman’s mother smelled of sauerkraut. The umpire ruled that Gehrig had been provoked by unsportsmanlike means and allowed him to finish the game.”

(Hey, the fact that two teams have been sold in the last few months should tell you something about how serious owners are about breaking the union to get a cap. If they thought they were gonna win, they’d be waiting.)

Due to illness and a sore throat affecting the ability to speak clearly, we are postponing this week’s episode until next Wednesday. Lots of great stories from baseball history in our archives until then - like the time all the umpires quit (ep 98) or our episode on Ty Cobb’s mom & dad (ep 73)!

Legit question, 4 outta 10 of the worst ERA leaders in baseball would have a worse ERA if they threw 6 innings and allowed 3 runs - generally defined as a quality start. Do we need to change that definition as pitchers have gotten way better? A 4.50 ERA used to just be a decent 3 & 4 starter.

Ah damn. Doucet was basically Quebec's Vin Scully, he called Expos games from season #1 in 1969 all the way to the relocation, and then transitioned to calling Jays games in French after that. Basically invented the French glossary of baseball terminology.

We join the MLB community and our colleagues at @TVASports in extending our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Jacques Doucet. The ‘Voice of Baseball’ in Quebec and a Canadian Baseball Hall of Famer - his impact on the game and the Montreal Expos will be remembered forever.

Silvio García died 49 years ago today. Was he the greatest Cuban position player prior to Miñoso? It’s gotta be between Torriente, Oms, and Silvio, I’d imagine.
