one thing i haven't seen in the arcade game discourse that's been going around: i feel like there's a stigma against "rote memorization" that deserves pushing back against just a little bit. i think a lot of people have the idea that once you have a game "memorized" the challenge is essentially over

and i don't really know what you ultimately gain from this. fume knight's design is totally "fair" in that he doesn't have any unreactable sucker punches and he still took me three tries. sir alonne took me dozens (lest you think i'm humblebragging). you're probably going to lose first try anyway!

of course, this happens a handful of times and these happen to be some of the memorable parts. maybe this is where you use your ninpou. maybe you stand somewhere not so obvious and they'll all group up for a melee attack. it's a little puzzle that only works if you accept it'll hit you first try

i think a lot of people have it in their heads that once you know the precise spawn point of every threat, you just dispatch them in an obvious order and there's nothing else to figure out. but it's rarely that simple, and if you write this off as bad or outdated design you close off many options

a sneaky downside to designing games in ways that don't reward rote memorization (put another way: games where you must be able to react to everything sight unseen) is there are certain things you just can't do. like ninjas spawning behind and in front of you simultaneously in shinobi

one reason i don't want to give in to the "why start a forum no one's going to use it anyway" sentiment that seems to be slowing web 1.0 revival efforts is because social media is inordinately stressful if your basic personhood is a political flashpoint. maybe you don't need alternatives, but i do

i have this horrible habit of getting lazy on the first qcf when i try to jump in kunai xx kasumi suzaku, so i just jump in, j.lp which misses, land... then do that horrible risky qcf lp low on the ground. it always hits and people always go "nice" and i never have the heart to tell them i fucked up

nothing cuts quite like a "nice" from someone who guessed right, but your execution failed and you ended up mixing both players at once

i gotta find more modern games i like, dude. i guess part of it is i don't really enjoy shooting guns so a pretty big chunk of popular multiplayer stuff is fighting an uphill battle

i like those souls games! dark souls 2 and 3 i could take or leave, but demon's, dark, elden ring and bloodborne are all fine. everything souls-inspired feels like it's laser focused on dodging and parrying though and neither of those are that exciting to me

just thinking out loud here perhaps i should check out 1000xresist. and 13 sentinels. probably not on stream for either one though

i'm going back through my stream vod archives because i want to start putting my local archives on Youtube instead of using Twitch's built-in export feature and apparently i've played Neo Mr. Do THREE times this year? why?

I've been mulling over how I want to organize stream VODs since the change to Twitch highlights made my old method super impractical... I actually have local recordings going back many years and I'd like to get it all on Youtube eventually

My gut tells me vods that are just like, here's my stream from September 29th completely unedited, can be unlisted on Youtube so they don't clutter up recommendations. and then like first time playthroughs can be listed, organized into playlists etc...

i've been mulling over how i want to chop up stream archives and throw them on youtube and i wonder if there's a less annoying way to do this than premiere pro...

i tried to scramble and set up some offsite data archival before today's stream as i am COMPLETELY out of space and it's amazing how awful the AWS control panel is. you can simply type an exact string match for the thing you want and get unrelated nonsense instead

okay well for a player of my experience level deathsmiles is indeed an easy 1cc as long as you, like, read the manual
