I hate to be reductive, but imo the reasons for the current situation (and massive discontent) are obvious: The insane migration of wealth from the middle class to a tiny ultra-wealthy minority. Twain could never have imagined such a gilded class.
Youth protests in Europe and India signal a deepening crisis. For most people, democracy hasn't delivered.
@ashliedstevens.bsky.social There’s another facet to this: In college I’d stayed over at my gf’s. I was going to the store for myself. “Get me an apple.” Got her an apple. “This isn’t the right kind.” Not sure what % of partners are afraid to get the wrong type of apple, but it isn’t 0.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?
@petebuttigieg.bsky.social Be like this, Pete. I have a trans daughter. Be like this. cc @susiebright.bsky.social youtu.be/uj_R4H4U_mk?...
This kind of post always confuses me. This is social media; social media is all about opinions and expressing them. It’s fine to disagree with the opinions of others; they’re *opinions* after all. But to gatekeep what kind of opinions are appropriate as a reply to a post strikes me as weird.
Interesting reaction to other people enjoying something
I’m never watching another of Matthew McConaughey’s films again. “Walk on road, hm? Walk right side, safe. Walk left side, safe. Walk middle, sooner or later, squish like grape.” tinyurl.com/3k2cz867
@alexwgalbraith.bsky.social Pretty disappointed to see Brad Dourif on your list. I’ve been an admirer of his work since I first saw him (in Ragtime), and would be quite disappointed to find out he’s a political fellow traveler of Shapiro’s.
The failed screenwriter is in the business of giving disgraced stars an embarrassing second act.
@jamestalarico.bsky.social why did you throw my trans daughter under the bus?
@briankarem.bsky.social I literally * just* finished reading your post about her in @salon.com, went to my BlueSky feed, and there this was. Jon must have posted it whe I was in the middle of reading “The aforementioned Anthony Scaramucci publicly mused that she may not last as long as he did.”

It’s a way for McDonald’s to lay off people and have “dynamic pricing”. It has nothing whatsoever to do with “efficiency”, other than trying to find the most efficient way to line the pockets of the C-suite arse-clowns.
As McDonald's automates and Chick-fil-A sticks with people, hospitality is up for grabs.
@mctelevision.bsky.social Fringe for sure. Many episodes of Star Trek: TOS. (“Devil in the Dark” eg)
Author Alan Sepinwall tells Salon how the show's creator, Rod Serling, changed entertainment.

And meanwhile @schumer.senate.gov is going to write a sternly-worded letter and request investigations and reforms. Because that’s worked out so well this far.
I am angry tonight. Because tonight ICE shot a New Yorker. They shot a New Yorker while his five year old child was in the car. ICE makes this city less safe. We want them out. Now.
Compare Schumers typically-limp response to Mamdani’s. He has got to go.
The shooting of a New Yorker by ICE agents today is deeply disturbing, especially amid reports that a child was in the car when shots were fired. I’m relieved the man is receiving medical care and the child was unharmed. But enough is enough. New Yorkers deserve the full truth about what happened.
Cashiers don’t really understand cash now, even when the machine calculates change. My bill was for $75.76. I gave her $86. She was baffled. “This is $80.” “Yes; and you’ll give me a ten back.” She punched the numbers in & yes indeed, I got $10.25 back. Fewer bills in the wallet. Not rocket science.
Sometimes, there just isn’t a hack. Isn’t a way around. I’ve never forgotten the first time I encountered this reality. College. A worker at admissions. I tried to get around a late fee by explaining, cajoling, asking politely: Nope. These folks face smart-ass students all day long. I had no chance.
My bff did his graduate research on AMANDA, the precursor to IceCube. Which is about as close as I’ll ever get to a Nobel Prize. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antarct... He took me into his lab at Berkeley and showed me the detectors he & his labmate were building. www.npr.org/2026/10/06/g...

Political appeal isn't just about policy. @amandamarcotte.bsky.social examines how Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff's charisma sets him apart from potential 2028 GOP contenders, and why White House insults may have backfired.

*That* is what finally crossed the line for this guy? Seriously? Not killing innocent fisherman, rendering US citizens to other countries, or murdering Iranian school children; it’s giving out a Senator’s phone number. Hate to tell you, pal, but *you’re* one of the biggest goobers in the Senate.
The GOP senator says Trump crossed a line by posting Sen. Tom Cotton's phone number over daylight saving time.
@alexgalbraith.bsky.social This is a favorite of our family. Love Steve Zahn and Tom Everett Scott (who looks like a young Tom Hanks), along with a very young Liv Tyler. Plus it introduced me to Adam Schlesinger and Fountains of Wayne, very good things. Really like it.
Tom Hanks' directorial debut produced a fake song that was undeniable.
